Griffins live in wild mountainous or desert country, making their nests on cliffs, from which they can descent to the plains to hunt. Since each Griffin is stronger then a hundred eagles, it can easily carry off a pair of horses or two oxen yoked together.
These creatures also serve as horses for the Gods. Nemesis, the dreadful goddess whose task it is to pursue evil-doers and avenge crimes, always travels in a chariot drawn by these beasts.
The long claws of the Griffin, each of which is as large as the horn of an ox, darken at the touch of poison, and for this reason they are much sought after. Lucky for them that they are very safe here, we protect them here. Occasionally a holy man or woman who has retired to the wilderness will come upon one which has wounded itself on the rock, or stepped on a thron. If the hermit is brave and kind enough to heal the Griffin, the grateful Griffin will break off one of its claws as a reward. (It grows back like our fingernails do.)
