The Valley of the Unicorn

Unicorn, Unicorn!
One of the rarest beasts on earth is the unicorn. It looks like a little white horse of the finest breed, but bearded like a goat. From the center of its forehead grows a long spiral-patterned horn; hence, the name Uni-corn or "one-horn". It dwells in the forest and is sometimes seen browsing in flowery woodland meadows.

The horn of this beast has many magical properties. When a pool or stream has become muddied and fould, so that all animals will no longer go near it, the unicorn only has to dip its horn it the water for it to become clear and sweet again. Cups and goblets made of unicorn horn have the same purifying virtue. Ground into a powder the horn cures fevers, fits and the plague. It makes drunken men sober, madmen wise, and is a certain antidote to all poisons.

In ancient times the only known mean of catching this wonderful beasts was to run toward a large tree and dodge aside at the last moment. Hoping the Unicorn would get its horn stuck in the tree trunk. Now however a way was found not only to trap it but to tame it as well. A maiden would go into the woods or meadows where the beast was to graze and sit waiting. If a unicorn scented her, it would come and lay its head in her lap. As she stroked its mane it would fall asleep and the hunters could capture it. As long as the maiden was near the unicorn would not try to escape. This way it would not hurt the unicorn and the people would have their horn, because unicorn shed and grow new ones as they mature.
