*Xaman Ek - Mayan god of merchants, business, economy, trade.

*Xaphan (Unk) - A rabble-rouser of the worst sort, he suggested the rebels set fire to Heaven during the battle of angels. His idea met with a warm reception; but before a spark could fly, the lot of them were cast into the Abyss. Xaphan fell hard thanks in part to his fiendish inventiveness. Now he fans the flames of damnation; a set of bellows is his fitting attribute.

*Xilonen - The Aztec maize-goddess, called "the hairy-one" referring to the hair-like tassels of the corn. In midsummer, humans were sacrificed to her to secure a good harvest. She is the wife of Tezcatlipoca.

*Xipe Totec - The mysterious Aztec god of agriculture, spring and the seasons, the symbol the death and rebirth of nature. In order to stimulate the growth in both nature and mankind, he flayes himself to offer food to humans (such as the maize seed loses its outer skin to enable the shoot to grow). After he has shed his skin, he appears as a shining, golden god. In his honor, each year in the beginning of spring, people were sacrificed to him. These victims were flayed alive and the priests wore these skins in various rituals. These rituals symbolized the renewal of the earth and the budding of new life. Xipe Totec is also the god of the west and the patron of goldsmiths. He is thought to be responsible for sending diseases to man, such as the plague, blindness and scabs. He is depicted as a flayed man, covered in (his own) skin and his name means "our lord the flayed one".

*Xiuhcoatl - The Aztec fire-snake and the personification of drought and scorched earth.

*Xiuhtecutli - also called Huehueteotl ("old god"), is the senior-deity of the Aztec pantheon. He is the personification of light in the darkness, warmth in coldness, and life in death. A god of light and fire, he is often depicted with a red or yellow face, with a censer on his head. His wife is mentioned as Chalchiuhtlicue, a water and vegetation goddess, although she also appears as the wife of Tlaloc. At the end of a 52-year cycle (the Aztec century) it was feared that the gods would discontinue their contract with mankind. To appease them, at the end of such a cycle feasts were held in their honor, where Xiuhtecutli as the god of fire was the center of their attention. Victims were placed on burning coals, after the hearts had been removed from the bodies.

*Xi Wang-mu - The Chinese goddess of immortality and the personification of the feminine element yin. The Taoist Xi Wang-mu is referred to as the 'Royal Mother of the West', and rules over the western paradise of the immortals. She is the daughter of the god Yu-huang and her husband is Mu Gong. Originally she was a terrifying tiger-woman who brought the plague, but under the influence of Taoism she became a benign goddess. Her nine-stories palace of jade lies in the mythical Kun-lun mountains, near the Lake of Jewels. It is surrounded by a wall of over a thousand miles long and of pure gold. The male immortals reside in the right wing and the female immortals reside in the left wing of this palace. In her garden she cultivates the peach of immortality. This peach tree forms only one peach every three thousand years, which then takes another three thousand years to ripen. When it is ripe, Hsi Wang-mu invites the immortals to a feast to celebrate their birthday and to partake ot the miraculous peach which bestows another lease of immortality. She is portrayed as a young beautiful woman wearing a royal gown, sometimes riding a peacock. Her favorite animal is the feng, the symbol of immortality. *Xochipilli - the Aztec god of flowers, maize, love, games, beauty, song and dance. He is the husband of Mayahuel and the twin brother of Xochiquetzal. He is also referred to as Macuilxochitl, which means "five flowers". Xochipilli is depicted with a stick of which the sharp tip penetrates a human heart.

*Xochiquetzal Ichpuchtli - The Aztec goddess of the earth, flowers, plants, games and dance, but mainly she is a goddess of love. She is also the patroness of artisans, prostitutes, pregnant women and birth. Originally Xochiquetzal ("Flower Feather") was associated with the moon. This goddess is the most charming of the Aztec pantheon and her retinue consists of butterflies and birds. Every eight years a feast was held in her honor where the celebrants wore animal and flowers masks. She is the twin sister of the flower prince Xochipilli and sometimes mentioned as the wife of the rain god Tlaloc.

*Xocotl - the Aztec god of fire and of the stars.

*Xolotl - Bad luck Aztec god of the underworld, brought humankind and the element of fire to the surface. the god of lightning who guides the dead to the Mictlan. The Aztecs regard him as the twin brother of Quetzalcoatl. As lord of the evening star and personification of Venus, he pushes the sun at sunset towards the ocean and guards her during the night on her dangerous journey through the underworld. Xolotl is represented as a skeleton, or as a man with the head of a dog.

*Yabune - Japanese house god.

*Yacatechutli - Aztec god of traders and merchants.

*Yaksha - In Hindu myth, Yakshas are chthonic semi-divine beings, half god and half demon. They live under the earth in the Himalayas where they guard the wealth of the earth (gems, gold, silver, etc.). They are led by Kubera, the god of wealth. Like their leader, they have all fat bellies and plump legs. They have no special characteristics, are not violent, and are therefore called punyajana ("good beings")

*Yama - In Hinduism, Yama is the god of death and the protector of the southern hemisphere. He is one of the Lokapalas (the world guardians), as well as one of the Adityas. Yama has a green body, wears red clothing, and rides on a black bull. In his left hand he holds a loop with which he pulls the soul from the body of the deceased.

*Yama-no-kami - The Japanese goddess of the hunt, forest, agriculture, and vegetation.

*Yama-Uba - A protective spirit in Japanese myth.

*Yami - In the Vedic tradition, Yami is the mother of mankind. She is the daughter of the sun-god Surya and together with her twin brother Yama they form the first human pair. In Hinduism she is the mother goddess and daughter of Vivasvan. In Tibet, she is the goddess of death who rules of the female spirits of Naraka.

*Yan-lo - The god of the dead, lord and judge of the Fifth Hell. Punishment in this hell is the memory of things past. Yan-lo is completely identical to the Hindu god of death, Yama. In Chinese myth, however, he holds no power over those who by their excellence on earth pass to higher planes of existence. He is also simply referred to as Wang. Yan Lo's birthday is the 8th of the First Moon.

*Yang Jing - The Chinese Goat God. Peasants in the mountainous regions make sacrifices to Yang Jing for protection against wild animals. He is depicted with a goat's head worn like a bonnet and a goatskin.

*Yao-shi - The Chinese Buddha who is dedicated to saving lives, healing wounds and curing diseases. His full-name is Yao-Shi-Fo ("Physician Buddha").

*Yao-Shih - Chinese master of psychic powers, healing, divination, and prophecy.

*Yaotzin (Aztec) - god of Hell

*Yemonja - One of the great African goddesses, specifically of Nigerian Yoruba. She was the daughter of the sea into whose waters she flows. Her breasts were enormous because she mothered so many Yoruban gods. She also is the Mama Watta, or "mother of the waters", and gave birth to all the bodies of water in the world. She is the sister and wide of Aganju, the soil god, and together they had Orungan, god of the noonday sun, as their child. She is known by many different names, each with some variations in character: As Yemayah or Yemoja, she is the orisha of the oceans, seas, fish, and motherhood. Nurturing, feminine, and life-giving. Considered the epitome of feminine power. Like the ocean, she can be not only gentle but destructive and torrential as well. She holds the secrets that are within the sea. She can be invoked for issues with childbirth, mothers, fertility, or anything involving women's issues or women's mysteries. As Imanje or Yemanja in Brazil, she is the ocean goddess of the crescent moon. As Ymoja in West Africa, she is the river goddess who grants fertility to women. In Cuba, she is Yemayah . Yemaya Achabba , stern goddess - Yemayah Oqqutte , violent goddess - Yemayah Ataramagwa , wealthy queen of the sea - Yemayah Olokun , dream goddess. She is Agwe in Haitian voodoo beliefs. Finally, she is Yamoja , a combination of the phrase Iyamo eja ("our mother").

*Yen-lo-wang - A Chinese earth-god.

*Yeng-Wang-Yeh - Greatest of the Chinese gods of hell, he judged human souls.

*Yi-Ti - The Chinese god of wine.

*Yonne - A Celtic river deity.

*Yosei - Japanese fairies. They are most often seen as birds, cranes or swans.

*Yu - Chinese hermaphrodite deity who made the earth suitable for life. He/she created the passes in the mountains by plowing a way through in the shape of a bear. As a snake, Yu led the waters of the Flood (the Yellow River) to the abyss. Yu's symbol is a double snake.

*Yu-Huang-Shang-Ti - Chinese sky god, father of heaven. He is a creator who made men, fashioning them from clay. He sees and hears all.

*Yum Caax - Mayan god of maize, joy, happiness, growth, life, birth, husbandry, wealth, and good crops.

*Yu-qiang - A Chinese sea god and god of the ocean winds. As the god of the sea he assumes the shape of a fish and he rides on two dragons; as the god of the wind he has the body of a bird and a human face.

*Yuan-shi tian-zong - The "Celestial Venerable of the Primordial Beginning", one of the highest deities of religious Taoism. He is one of the pure ones, the so-called San-qing and resides in the Heaven of Jade Purity. It is believed that he came to being at the beginning of the universe as a result of the merging of pure breaths. He then created Heaven and Earth. Originally, he headed the administration of Heaven but -- like a wise ruler -- entrusted that task to his assistant Yu-huang. The importance of Yu-huang later came to exceed that of Yuan-shi tian-zong. At the beginning of each age or aeon he transmits the Ling-pao ching, the Scriptures of the Magic Jewel, to subordinate deities. Those in turn instruct mankind in the teachings of the Tao. Yuan-shi tian-zong is also believed to rescue souls caught in the various hells and sets them free. Yuan-shi tian-zong is said to be without beginning and the most supreme of all beings, in fact, representative of the principle of all being. From him all things arose. He is eternal, limitless, and invisible. Yuan-shi tian-zong is also known as Tian-bao-jun, Lord of the Heavenly Jewel.

*Zababa - An ancient Akkadian god, patron of the city Kis. He is a god of war and is mentioned as the consort of the goddess Ishtar. He can be compared to the Sumerian gods Ningirsu and Ninurta.

*Zabulon (Unk) - Demon who possessed one of the nuns at Loudun.

*Zaebos (Sumerian) - Grand Count of hell said to have gentile disposition.

*Zagam (Unk) - Grand king and president of infernal regions. Said to change things into its opposite. Demon of counterfeit.

*Zakar - The Babylonian god of dreams, which were messages from the gods.

*Zalmoxis - A god of the Getae and Dacians, a people of Thrace near the Hellespont. Assuming a human form, he lived among humans but disappeared into the underworld for three years and returned in the fourth. He was said to have brought mystic lore regarding the immortality of the soul from Egypt and from Pythagoras, introducing this concept, together with the arts of civilization, to his people.

*Zam-Armatay - The Persian goddess of the earth.

*Zao-jun - The "Lord of the Hearth", an immensely popular hearth and kitchen deity in Chinese folk religion. He is also the protector of the family. An image or picture of him is fixed above the hearth and from this position he notes everything that happens in the house. This he reports to Yu-huang on each New Year's Day. In order to make him submit a favorable to the Jade Emperor, people smear honey around his mouth on New Year's Eve. He is usually shown surrounded by a host of children, and is venerated by the whole family.

*Zapan (Unk) - Demi-Dem. Commands 4 Legions. One of the kings of hell according to Wierius.

*Zappu - Babylonian deities of the Pleiades.

*Zaqar - A Sumerian god of nighttime visions or dreams.

*Zarich - one of the female members of the Daevas and the personification of ageing. Her eternal opponent is Ameretat.

*Zarpanit - Zarpanit, also known as Beltia, is an ancient Sumero-Babylonian goddess, the consort of Marduk.

*Zeemebooch (German) - monarch of the empire of the dead.

*Zemes mate - ("mother of the soil") is concerned with the welfare of the people and makes the fields fertile. She is also sometimes identified with Velu mate, for she too rules over the dead in the underworld.

*Zenenet - The Egyptian goddess of Hermonthis.

*Zepar - Grand duke of hell - god of war. Also Vepar and Separ.

*Zephar - Lesser Dem. Zepar. Duke of Hell. Induces Pederasty. Teaches how to polymorph. Grants love spells. Commands 28 Legions.

*Zephyrus - Greek-Roman god fo the west winds, the most pleasant and favored of the winds. Symbolizes the element air. Also known as Zephyrs, Zephyr.

*Zeus - the youngest son of Cronus and Rhea, he was the supreme ruler of Mount Olympus and of the Pantheon of gods who resided there. Being the supreme ruler he upheld law, justice and morals, and this made him the spiritual leader of both gods and men. Zeus was a celestial god, and originally worshiped as a weather god by the Greek tribes. These people came southward from the Balkans circa 2100 BC. He has always been associated as being a weather god, as his main attribute is the thunderbolt, he controlled thunder, lightning and rain. Theocritus wrote circa 265 BC: "sometimes Zeus is clear, sometimes he rains". He is also known to have caused thunderstorms. In Homer's epic poem the Iliad he sent thunderstorms against his enemies. The name Zeus is related to the Greek word dios, meaning "bright". His other attributes as well as lightening were the scepter, the eagle and his aegis (this was the goat-skin of Amaltheia).

*Zhang Fei - One of the gods of butchers in Chinese mythology. Originally, he was a butcher to Guan Gong, with whom he got into a fight, and to Liu Bei, who separated them. The date of the oath of friendship and brotherhood taken by these three is given as 191 AD. Because these three military heroes swore allegiance in an effort to unify their land, they are often referred to as the Three Musketeers of China.

*Zhi-ni - The Chinese goddess of spinners.

*Zhong kui - The Chinese Taoist god of the afterlife, and a god of exorcism. His Japanese equivalent is Shoki.

*Zhu Rong - In Chinese mythology, Zhu Rong is the god of fire and the ruler of the southern hemisphere. He is the father of Gong Gong, a demon who causes floods. Zhu Rong helped to separate the heaven and the earth. He rides a tiger. He is also simply referred to as Li.

*Zhu-yi - The Red Robed One, a deity often found in the company of Wen-chang. He acts as the patron of ill-prepared candidates for official examinations.

*Zibelthiurdos - A Thracian storm god.

*Zip - Mayan god of the hunt. Protector of the deer. According to legend, the deer created the vagina of the moon goddess by stepping on her abdomen. She was then she was able to bear the children of the sun god. Zip would deceive hunters to believe he was shooting a deer when in fact it was a iguana (a sacred animal of Itzam Na; to kill one is to incite the death penalty.). To gain Zip's favor through worship and sacrifice results in a good hunt.

*Zi-yu - The Chinese divine inventor of war and weapons. He was usually depicted as ox-headed.

*Zotz - The Mayan bat-god of caves, and the patron of the Zotzil Indians in Chiapas (Mexico) near the Pacific Ocean. Zotz appears in many Central American creation myths.

*Zu - In Sumero-Akkadian mythology, Zu is a divine storm-bird and the personification of the southern wind and the thunder clouds. This demon, half man and half bird, stole the "Tablets of Destiny" from Enlil and hid them on a mountaintop. Anu ordered the other gods to retrieve those tables, but all were afraid of this demon. According to one text, Marduk killed the bird, but in another text it died through the arrows of the god Ninurta. The bird is also referred to as Imdugud or Anzu.

*Zurvan - The primordial god in Persian religion, and the god of infinite time and space. Zurvan is the father of the good god Ahura Mazda and the evil god Angra Mainyu. He had to make sacrifices for 1,000 years to get them because he is androgynous. With children representing the two opposites, Zurvan himself is regarded as a neutral god; one for whom there is no distinction between good or evil. Zurvan is also the god of destiny, light and darkness. In Zurvanism, the state religion of the Sassanides in the 3rd-7th century AD, Zurvan is the highest god and lord of the four elements.
