The Turkey Run Incident

This story is an interesting one to say the least. Ray Cathode called me up and told me that he had a show that he wanted to put on the air, and asked if he could come over and we could go somewhere to air it. I was cool with the idea and we decided that we should go and pick up Radio Animal and then head to Turkey Run.

Turkey Run was a nice place. There was a park that had a shelter house with AC power so we didn't need a generator. We got there and set up our tape decks and transmtter and Radio Animal climbed up (high!) into a tree and put the antenna up.

I had a new show to air so we put my show on first. That would be followed by a Tube Radio show and then WKND's program.

Everything was going along just fine and then it started to get cold. In order to keep warm I sat on top of my Viking Indian style to take advantage of the heat that it gives off while transmitting. Then we took turns getting warm by the Viking. After WKND's program was over we decided it was time to get home and warm up.

Animal took the antenna down while Ray and I wrapped up the transmitter and take decks. We packed off and away we went.

About a month later, I had a new show and so did Ray. We called Animal and he wanted to air the past couple of hours of the Allience For Free Radio. We had run out of gas for the generator during the first Allience broadcast so he wanted to conclude it there. We set up in much the same manner as we did the last time and started broadcasting. We all were smart enough to bring coats this time and we were all set to be there for awhile.

About two hours into broadcasting a Suburban type vehicle pulled up and checked out the car. We think the driver may have gotten the license number. You have to keep in mind that the F.C.C. was very active at this point in time, so we thought it might have been them. We started to get ready to tear down and the vehicle left. We decided to end the transmission just in case it WAS the F.C.C. Just as Animal got into the tree to start getting the antenna down the vehicle came back with another car. We hid until they left and then scrambled to tear down. We decided that never again would we broadcast from there. We all laid kinda low for awhile.

We have never forgotten that night and we wonder who it could have been. Since none of us were ever contacted we doubt that it was the F.C.C. but we'll never know, for sure.

We were glad that things worked out for the best. We had some memorable times there keeping warm by the Viking and getting scared when that strange vehicle arrived.
