Dinos??Who??

Former Interior Minister Dinos Michaelides has finally resigned, and not before time. Politicians in Cyprus just do not know when to give up! This is why we see the same faces in power year after year. Now of course the ex Minister wishes to "reveal" all, acting like some spoilt little child who's toy has been taken away, and he does all of this to protect the President's position. Pleeeeease.......we are not that naive! Mr "ordinary civilian" Michaelides is probably upset because he will not be called Minister anymore, and get to drive around in taxpayers BMW's. Sounds childish doesn't it? but you don't know how close to the truth I am!
Road Safety

A conference was held in Nicosia recently between the Police Chiefs of traffic division, and visiting experts from London in an attempt to deal with the carnage on our roads. Whilst I applaud the efforts of the police in this apsect, I do think that some responsibility for this must lie with the driving schools who are meant to be teaching people to drive properly. Stricter tests must be applied, not only in the practical element of driving, but more importantly, the theory behind it. It is not just good enough to punish those responsbile for the terrible sites we see on our roads, but to tackle the root of the problem at source. People have to be taught to respect the road, the laws, and the "weapon" they are driving!

What a load of sewers!

Health & Safety. basically, the protection of a persons' "health & safety" as required by law, by adhering to strict guidelines and implementing them. This is something which unfortunately is not visible in Cyprus. A prime example is the work being carried out by constuction companies on behalf of our local sewerage boards. The current state of these roads is a disgrace. The diversions that are in place to direct the flow of traffic is unbelielevable. Cars are being forced to drive through unsurfaced tracks, pavements, and even in one case onto a beach! Pedestrians have all but given up, for the risk of falling into unmarked, unlit, and uncovered holes. What ever happened to common sense? Why are the Municipalities not inspecting these diversions, the work be carried out, and the danger the public is being exposed to? After all, they are responsible for hiring these companies, so what's going on? The fact remains that each of these companies are insured against any loss or damage sustained to the public or their property as a result of negligence on their part, if proved of course. Unfortunately, until such time when Health & Safety laws are implemented in Cyprus, or the insurance companies go bankcrupt, the state of are roads, and the danger the public face, will continue.
