The Story of the Christmas Stocking
According to legend, a kindly nobleman grew despondent over the death of his beloved wife
and foolishly squandered his fortune. This left his three young daughters without dowries
and thus facing a life of spinsterhood.
The generous St. Nicholas, hearing of the girls' plight, set forth to help.
Wishing to remain anonymous, he rode his white horse by the nobleman's house and
threw three small pouches of gold coins down the chimney where they were fortuitously
captured by the stockings the young women had hung by the fireplace to dry.
Now children hang Christmas Stockings on Christmas Eve so that Santa Claus can fill it with
small toys, candy, fruit, coins, or other small gifts when he arrives.
Tradition in Western culture dictates that a child who behaves badly during the year
will receive only a lump of coal.
Jolly Old St Nicholas
Jolly old St. Nicholas, Lean your ear this way!
Don’t you tell a single soul, What I’m going to say;
Christmas Eve is coming soon; Now, you dear old man,
Whisper what you’ll bring to me: Tell me if you can.
When the clock is striking twelve, When I'm fast asleep,
Down the chimney broad and black, With your pack you'll creep;
All the stockings you will find Hanging in a row;
Mine will be the shortest one, You'll be sure to know.
Johnny wants a pair of skates, Susy wants a dolly;
Nellie wants a story book; She thinks dolls are folly;
As for me, I want so much; everything in sight
Choose for me, old Santa Claus. What you think is right.
