- history: Nuriko and his little sister were very close, but when Nuriko was young, Kourin was killed in an accident. A careless driver ran her over with a horse and cart. Nuriko's parents told him that the best thing to do would be to forget about Kourin since she was gone, but Nuriko refused to forget his sister. Nuriko put on his sister's clothes so that she could live through him. However it was that Nuriko was invited to court, he pretended to be his sister, calling himself 'Kourin'. It wasn't until Miaka exposed him as a man that he started to act like himself again.

"Court Warrior"
When Miaka first met Nuriko, he told her he was a woman named Kourin, a name he took in honour of his dead sister. At first, he resented Miaka, the way she was loved and respected by everyone, especially the emperor, but Miaka made a special effort and won Nuriko over and the two became good friends.
Though Nuriko was essentially gay at the outset, over time, like most everyone else, he fell in love with Miaka, letting go of his sister's memory. Nuriko always delighted in teasing and insulting his miko, but after a while it evolved into flirting, more or less unrecognized by Miaka.
However, Nuriko is an honourable man and a loyal friend and he would never even consider standing between Miaka and Tamahome. In fact, he made a special effort to make sure that they stayed together when they were having problems.
