My husband broke and trained horses all his life
until he grew to realize his body was getting too
old for that kind of abuse. We made the decision
to sell our horses and move into a beautiful
spacious home in town right next to the country
club. Golf course here we come!
For a while it seemed rather nice not to be tied
down with livestock. We spent time with friends,
went to some of the finest restaurants, relaxed and
watched tv, and even had time to finish projects
that we had started long ago.
It didn't take long for either of us to feel that
something was seriously lacking in our lives.
We spent less than a year in town before we began
our search for our own "little piece of heaven."
We found our little piece of the world 45 miles
southwest of Lincoln Nebraska and moved into our
new home several weeks before my husbands birthday.
It was exhilarating to inhale the sweet-scented aroma
of hay, freshly turned earth after a summer rain, and
the sound of silence except for the beautiful songs
of the birds and chirping crickets. We both knew that
we would never be happy anywhere else. Still there
was something lacking
--of course--horses!
During the next week I would take every opportunity,
while my husband worked outside on a project, to talk
with many people, and do a lot of research, and I then
decided I would give my husband something VERY special
for his birthday this year! I told him my daughter was
picking up a horse in Texas and I was going to go along
and keep her company. He said that would be fine,
so off I went! What he didn't know is that "I"
was going to pick up a horse that I had bought
for his birthday!
Several days later, after a special dinner and a
birthday cake,I brought out a small package for him
to open. He took out a tiny little halter and
looked a little puzzled. I told him his birthday
present would fit very nicely in that little
halter . He looked at me in disbelief. We hopped in
the truck and drove several miles to my daughters ranch
and I went to the barn where I had our new little
horse hiding out for a few days. I walked out
with little Fire Ball, and handed the lead to my
husband and said, Happy Birthday!!! His reaction
melted my heart. He sat on the ground next to his
new little friend and stroked him as though he was
was made of fine china. I could tell my husband had
a tear in his eye. It was love at first sight.
That was 7 years ago and we know now that it is
really true ~ "You can't have just one!"
Our little herd numbers 20 at this time. We
carefully selected the finest quality miniatures
to begin our herd. My husband teaches our miniatures
to drive. (For you city slickers--I don't mean to
drive a car--they are smart enough but their legs
are too short!) *smile* Our grandchildren love
to jump in the cart and go for a ride.
My husband is training a few teams now and hopes to
find "just the right horses" for a 6 hitch.
