"Love is patient;
Love is kind...
It bears all things,
Believes all things,
Hopes all things,
Endures all things."
1 Corinthians 13:4,7

In the last week of June '95, I got a call from a young woman
who had purchased a horse for $400.00 to save it from a bad
situation. She had only had the horse for 10 days and realized
she was in over her head. The horse was very thin and "would
I take her?" We hooked up the trailer and left immediately.
The picture you see is that mare, taken the day after her
arrival. Her tail is braided because she had scours. She was
happy to have the good food we provided, but oh, so tired and
weak. Our vet took blood to check for disease and found none,
she was estimated to be 500 pounds underweight. Her teeth
were fine, temp. normal.

Two days later she was down, her body so accustomed to destroying
its own tissue for sustenance that it couldn't be stopped.

The U of M let us borrow their sling and a wonderful group of
volunteers from the Sahara Sands Club came and helped get
everything rigged up.

During this entire time poor Rosie rallied, ears up, eating,
drinking, nickering a welcome to those who came to visit. But
the cycle couldn't be broken, it was too late. Rosie died
with her head in my arms on July 4, 1995 due to the type of
neglect that constitutes cruelty.
