Misano (Italy)
April 14 | 1 | 1-1 | 1 | 1 | ||
After a start that could have been better (remember that John´s last race was one year ago), John worked his way up to the front from sixth position. He took the lead and won the race with a considerable distance to the runner up.
1-2 | 1 | 1 | ||||
With the aid of a much better start,
it took John just three turns to take the lead. After a battle with,
amongst others, Anthony Gobert (Aus, Kawasaki), John finished second.
Because Gobert was disqualified on technical grounds - a minor
problem with his bike´s carburettors - John was handed the victory.
Apart from the problem with Gobert, a perfect weekend - pole position and double victory - and a perfect start of the championship.
Donington (Great Britain)
April 28 | 9 | 2-1 | 7 | 2 | ||
On one of his least favorite tracks, this race was as difficult as could be expected. At the start, John got stuck in the pack and was not able to gain positions. Troy Corser (Aus, Ducati) won the race easily.
2-2 | 6 | 2 | ||||
The second race was similar to the first one for John, except that the winner, again Corser, had to fight with Aaron Slight (NZ, Honda) for the victory.
Hockenheim (Germany)
May 12 | 4 | 3-1 | 2 | 2 | ||
In the beginning of the race, John lost contact with the first three riders - Slight, Corser and Pier-Francesco Chili (I, Ducati), and remained in fourth position for a long time. Corser crashed out, big time, and Chili fell during the last lap, handing victory to Slight and second place to John.
3-2 | 3 | 1 | ||||
In the second race, John was able to stay in the leading group, at one time even taking the lead. In the final stages three men battled for the victory: Carl Fogarty (GB, Honda), Slight, and John. This time Fogarty won.
Monza (Italy)
June 16 | 5 | 4-1 | DNF | 2 | ||
For reasons unknown to me, John had to start the race out of the pit lane: he was the last one to start. While working his way up through the field, he was taken out by another rider before one of the chicanes.
4-2 | DNF | 4 | ||||
John had to retire during the race due to technical problems. He had not been in a top position.
Brno (Czech Republic)
June 30 | 4 | 5-1 | 4 | 4 | ||
After a good start, John gradually lost positions. Corser was the winner.
5-2 | 6 | 4 | ||||
This time John´s start was not so good. He was unable to gain on the riders in front of him, but he was also not threatened from behind. Another victory for Corser.
Laguna Seca (U.S.A.)
July 21 | 1 | 6-1 | 1 | 4 | ||
On his favorite track, John was eager to show who was the fastest around Laguna. Other people (Corser, Gobert) held the same opinion, and so it was a tough battle between the three of them. Gobert crashed out and John won.
6-2 | 12 | 4 | ||||
Again a fight between the same people of race one, with as difference that this time Gobert stayed on his bike, and John could not threaten him, as he ran out of fuel in the last lap.
Brands Hatch (Great Britain)
August 4 | 6 | 7-1 | 3 | 4 | ||
John landed in second position, after a good start. He fought with Chili and Gobert, but was unable to keep up with them. He finished at considerable distance behind the winner Chili.
7-2 | DNF | 4 | ||||
This time John´s start was worse, and he got stuck in the pack. Later on in the race, John crashed out. Corser won.
Sentul (Indonesia)
August 18 | 3 | 8-1 | 1 | 4 | ||
After just a few turns, John was already leading the race, in front of Chili and Slight. They didn´t pose a threat to him, and John was able to extend his lead.
8-2 | 1 | 3 | ||||
John did not win this race as easily as the first one. He had to fight it out with Corser. At one point they collided, Corser fell, John didn´t, and went on to win the race.
Sugo (Japan)
August 25 | 5 | 9-1 | 5 | 3 | ||
I haven´t seen this race, have you?
9-2 | 2 | 3 | ||||

Assen (The Netherlands)
September 8 | 1 | 10-1 | 5 | 3 | ||
John failed to take advantage
of his pole position, as he entered turn one in seventh position.
He had to fight hard to gain positions, and almost lost it once, exiting the
infamous chicane before start/finish.
Winner was Fogarty, for the seventh time in succession.
10-2 | 3 | 4 | ||||
After an equally bad start in race two, John was better able to
keep up with the rest. In fact, he led the race when entering the same infamous
chicane before start/finish in the final lap. Fogarty came out faster though, and won,
also because John´s right foot slipped off the peg.
The front wheels of Fogarty, Corser and John were within one meter at the finish line.
Unfortunately, John´s wheel was the third one.
And so it was Fogarty´s eighth successive win at Assen.
Albacete (Spain)
October 6 | 2 | 11-1 | 3 | 4 | ||
After a good start, John briefly led the race, but fell back later. Chili crashed out and Corser won easily.
11-2 | 2 | 3 | ||||
This time John put up a good fight with Corser and Fogarty. Unfortunately, Corser ran away again, and he won with a big advantage
Phillip Island (Australia)
October 27 | 6 | 12-1 | 7 | 3 | ||
At the start, John got
stuck in the pack, and never came out. A win for Gobert.
At the end of this race, Corser had collected enough points to be crowned as the new world champion.
12-2 | 5 | 3 | ||||
The second race was almost a copy of the first one. During the race, several riders had collisions with sea-gulls. Corser was one of them. Another win for Gobert.
