Day 4--July 22--The Crags to Lost Cabin

We awoke at 5:30. We left camp at 7:00. Our ranger left for camp this morning, we were on our own. It was time to find out what Philmont was really about.

All I can say is SWITCHBACKS SWITCHBACKS SWITCHBACKS. It was another 2 1/2 hour hike to what is called Fish Camp. We took our rest stop here. The trail was made of many thing. Sometimes rock, sand, pine needles, gravel, or dirt. We past about 3 rockslides along the way. It looked real awesome. We saw a great view of Crater Peak.

We arrived at Fish Camp at 9:30. We were given a tour of the lodge. Our whole crews "future home." We tied flies to go fly fishing. No fish were caught though. We thought this camp was perfect. No wonder Waite Phillips made it his summer home. It was so amazing.

We had lunch there and drank some juice. One of the mini bears started drinking out of one of our cups that we left behind. We took pictures. It was a very nice hike through a valley, along the Agua Fria Creek. We crossed that stream so many times we lost count. It really slowed us down. I took another 2 1/2 hours to get to Lost Cabin.

Once again there were switchbacks. I was the most difficult hiking we had gone through so far. We found out who the slowest hiker was. Howard. Once we got to the top of the hill we saw the camp it was through a bunch of aspens and pines. We got there at about 3:00 Thunder and Lightning caused us to pack fast and set everything up ASAP. Very cold here. 75 degrees, max before the rain.

The bear bag cables are high and hard to find.

Spaghetti for dinner. This was the worst food I had ever had. DO NOT EAT THE BLUEBERRY COBLER. Me and Nate decided to pack it out rather than eat it. Very squishy.

I felt a little sick. Reading Howards journal I found out he was too. This camp was at 9200 feet. There was water at this camp. Saved a long walk back to the creek.

We played frisbee football that night with my cloth made frisbee. The advisors think they won but they cheated. Kerry thought he pulled a muscle when stepping in a hole. It was said most injuries occur in camp. True indeed. (We found out later that Kerry had actually broken a leg bone and hiked the last days on it.)

Bed at 8:30
