The work day is over and the sun is
shining , the open road calls my name. I
roll the old Harley
out of the shed and check all the
fluids and the tension on the chain.
Everything seems to be ready so I kick
her through and as she comes to life my
pulse rises a notch or two. Let her warm
up a little bit and get the oil moving
around as I check for any loose
fasteners. These old Harleys are great ,
but ya gotta keep a watchful eye on
things. As we roll out of the driveway
the tensions of the day seem to melt
away as we accelerate through the gears.
The small paved county roads are not the
smoothest but traffic is light and a guy
can putt along at his own pace. The
steady sound of the dual exhaust and the
feel of the powerful V-twin engine
between my legs is soothing and
exhilerating at the same time. My cares
seem to fall in my wake as the miles
roll by. I know there are things I
should be doing around the house but I
choose the longer route anyway , if God
didn`t love procrastinators He would
never have made a tomorrow. As we
approach the major highway and I see all
the commuter traffic and the semi-trucks
rolling by I am grateful that I had a
chance to relax and unwind on the
deserted back roads before the faster
paced traffic lures me to coax the ole
girl to pass a few four wheelers on the
smooth asphalt heading back home. It`s
time to get cleaned up and cook
something now but my mind is clear and
the cares of daily life are behind me
now. There`s a different route I`ve been
wanting to take one of these days. Maybe
tomorrow , tonight I will sleep well,
the freedom of the road has helped me to
feel serene.
