December 3rd: The Gathering
Before The SHOOT

Steve woke me fairly early, saying,
“Oh, Charly! It’s bitter cold out. Maybe you’ll not want to go on the shoot.”

As IF!!!There was simply a light FROST over the ground.
When I stepped outside (in jammies & a sweater), my breath barely made a bit of fog.
Clearly, Somerset’s version of “bitter cold” is farm warmer than Nebraska’s!
And, NO WAY did I want to miss the shoot!

An English “Hunt”
refers to hunting
via horseback.

An English “Shoot”
refers to hunting
on FOOT.

Steve gave me a pair of
“Wellies” (Wellington Boots)
… some wool socks … a “jumper”
(a sweatshirt) and a coat to wear.

Wearing a pair of spandex
beneath my jeans,
I stayed toasty warm.

We drove to Ronnie & Trish’s home / farm / dairy.

I wish I had pix of the FRONT of their home … but, I didn’t ever actually SEE it.
This is the “back” of their home … a sort of “court-yard-like” area.
The “house” is at right. The attached section in the pic’s center is the “Club House”
(note about that coming up).

Parts of their gorgeous home date from the 1500’s!

This is simply the side of their home … but, sort of shows how they are
located somewhere in the midst of the Somerset Moors.

Interested in reading INFO about the Somerset Moors?
(NOTE: No LINK back to HERE from there!)

ABOVE: That’s Steve in the blue jacket.

The room I call the “Club House” (LOL) may, indeed, be Ron & Trish’s “dining room!”
It is a room with a gigantic table, where the hunters gather before and after each shoot.
It simply LOOKS like a GUY’Z CLUB HOUSE.
Oddly enough, most of the guyz were drinking COFFEE … not tea!

That’s Ronnie, the host, in the cap.

That’s Roger, Ronnie’s co-host, running his hand over his head.

Ronnie and Roger
greeted me quite warmly.

But, being a stranger,
a YANK,
and the only woman
present that day,
most of the guyz simply
(politely!) IGNORED me
at the day’s beginning.

Ivor (above left) is Roger’s Dad.

The cheetah was shot by Ron
in Africa while on a LEGAL hunt.
However, due to customs rules,
he had to somewhat “smuggle”
the Trophy Pelt home!

The two bears were
shot in Canada.

The “settle” they are all perched on
dates from the 1700’s!

The “garage”-door end of the Club House.

I don’t know the story about the Zebra!
But it hangs on the wall opposite the “garage”-door end.
Under the picture frame on the RIGHT wall is the doorway into their home.
