Headquarters at Seoul
I And Two Others Aboard A C47 From This
Unit
Flew Into Kimpo Field From Japan
In The Middle Of the Night. After A
Couple Of Hours We Were Hustled Into A
Six X Six With Blacked Out Headlights And
Driven To Our Unit. As We Passed
Over The Han River, We Saw Two Or Three Bodies
Floating In The Water. We
Were Driven To Ewah College For Girls.

Triangulating
On Specific Targets Over
North Korea. Encoded Mission Instructions
From Headquarters Were
Sent To The Sites Using CW Radio
Equipment.
The Equipment At
Headquarters And The Sites Were Old
BC191 Transmitters And BC342 Receivers.
All radio communications both outgoing and
incoming were enciphered and deciphered using
the M209 encryption machine. The text of a
message was coded into 5 letter
code groups, then the reverse when decoding
took place. Should you want to read more about
the 209 and other very good
encryption
information, click

I Started My Radio Work At Headquarters
For A Period Of Time. Sure Was Difficult
At First As I Had To Get Used To The
Interfering Noise Coming In The Radio Receiver
While Trying To Copy Coded CW Messages. We
Used International Morse Code And
A Telegraph Key.

Upon Arrival To The Unit, We Were Given A
Cot
And Blanket (It Was Still Dark), And
A Carbine And Shells. However, There
Were No Mess-Kits To Eat From Or Canteens Or
Canteen Cups To Drink From. We Were
Taken To The Big Building Shown Above And
Told To Find A Place To Sleep. Most Of The
Main Roof Was Gone And We Could See
The Stars. In The Morning When It was
Time For Breakfast, We Dug In The Garbage For
Cans To Eat And Drink From. The Only
Way A Person Could Get a Canteen, Cup, And
Mess-Kit Was If Someone Shared With
You Or When Others Rotated Home, They Willed
Their Equipment To The One Who Remained
Behind. Later We Found Out That Some
Koreans Had Been Breaking In And
Stealing
Supplies.

(Twice), If Not On Duty, We Would
All Head For What Someone Called "The Snake
Pit" (Basement Of The Big Building).
It Was Rumored That They Would Toss
Over The Side Of The Plane Hand Grenades
Or Some Other Kind Of Bombs. It Sure
Got Loud As Anti Aircraft Guns
Would Start Shooting.
Having grown up in a city the size of Casper, Wyoming, population 26,000, the City of Seoul, was very large. After apposing armies had fought back and forth through the city it is was almost total devastation. The poor civilian population that I saw just seemed to be moving around in the mess that was left after the battles. Street gutters were flowing with sewage, as this is where people were relieving themselves. I learned later that sewage from homes and business's was normally dumped into what we called honey buckets (a big wagon pulled by Oxen). Sewage was then taken out to fields and spread on crops. Along with garbage, the place just stunk.
