TWO MORE USHL SKATERS COMMIT Omaha's Dan Welch; Sioux City's Matt Fetzer choose schools

(1/30/2001) - The United States Hockey League (USHL) announced today that Omaha forward Dan Welch and Sioux City defenseman Matt Fetzer have made commitments to Division 1 schools to pursue their studies and hockey careers.

Welch, 19, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound native of Hastings, Minnesota, will return to the University of Minnesota of the WCHA for the 2001-02 season. Welch spent last season, his freshman year, with the Golden Gophers before deciding to play a year of juniors. Through 36 games this season, he has accumulated 35 points (19 goals, 16 assists) and 79 penalty minutes. His point and goal totals are second on the Lancers team. Welch was also selected to Team USA in the 2001 USHL Prospects/All-Star Game, but due to academic conflicts he could not participate.

Fetzer, 18, a 5-foot-8, 174-pound native of Chicago, Illinois, will attend the University of Massachusetts- Amherst of the Hockey East for the 2002-03 season. In 24 games this year, he has tallied nine points (3 goals, 6 assists) and 34 penalty minutes.

Currently, 55 USHL skaters have committed to Division 1 institutions to continue their hockey and academic careers. The breakdown by conference is as follows: CCHA - 12, CHA - 4, ECAC - 5, Hockey East - 7, MAAC - 0, WCHA - 27
