Omaha netminder receives award for December
(1/8/2001) - The United States Hockey League (USHL) announced today that Omaha Lancers goaltender Marty Magers has been named the Goalies' World Magazine/Louisville Goalie of the Month for December.
Magers, 18, is a 6-foot-1, 179-pound native of Plainfield, Illinois. During December, he played in seven of nine games, collecting a 5-2-0 record with two shutouts. For the month, he allowed 11 goals while stopping 170 shots, generating a .939 save percentage and a 1.57 goals against average. The highlight of the month came when Magers only allowed one goal on 53 shots in a two-win weekend. He beat Rochester 3-1 on Friday, December 11, and then shutout West Division rival Des Moines, 2-0, the following night. The weekend performance earned him the Let's Play Hockey Defensive Player of the Week award.
On the season, the first year USHL player has registered a 7-2-1 record with two shutouts in nine games. He leads the league with a 1.69 GAA and is tied for the lead with a .934 save percentage.
"Marty has done a great job this season," Omaha GM/head coach Mike Hastings said. "He came in and stabilized our goalie position after Ray Fraser went down with a hand injury. Marty really made the most of his opportunity and now we basically have two number one goalies. That's a nice position to be in."
Magers has propelled from not even in the top ten to second place in the Goalies' World Computer Rankings with 101.93 total points. Beau Fritz of Lincoln still maintains the overall lead with 103.3 points. Sioux Falls' Kellen Briggs is in the third slot with 101.59 total points.
Goalies' World Magazine, a publication dedicated solely to goaltending, and Louisville Hockey, the official goalie equipment of the USHL, will present Magers with a personalized plaque recognizing him for his outstanding performance.
