Kearney, Neb. - Forward Dan Welch scored a pair of goals Friday night and goalie Marty
Magers made 31 saves to lead the Omaha Lancers to a 4-1 victory over the Tri-City Storm.
Welch, a University of Minnesota recruit, scored his 14th goal in the first period to put the
Lancers ahead. He added his team-leading 15th goal in the final period to close out the
Omaha scoring.
Magers, making just his third start of the season, was especially strong in the first period. He steered aside all 12
Storm shots as the Lancers were able to come out of the period holding a one-goal advantage.
"Dan played one of his best games of the season," Omaha Coach Mike Hastings said. "And Marty did a great job of
keeping his composure in that first period and keeping us in the game."
Welch, who had a hat trick in Omaha's 10-2 win over Des Moines last Saturday night, scored his first goal with 6:22
left in the first period. The score stayed that way until early in the second period, when forward Dan Hacker scored
what proved to be the winning goal off an assist from defenseman Lee Green.
Omaha made it 3-0 midway through the second period on Marty Guerin's first goal of the season.
Welch scored his second goal on a breakaway with eight minutes left in regulation. The Storm spoiled Magers'
shutout bid when Konrad Reeder scored on the power play with 4:30 left.
"I was sorry to see that shutout slip away from Marty, because he deserved it," Hastings said. "We had a little bit of a
breakdown on our penalty kill and it cost us."
Hastings said he was pleased with the way the Lancers spread out their scoring.
"We played four lines and three of them scored points," the coach said. "That's what kind of balance we need to win
in this league."
The Lancers (12-5-3) will have an even tougher assignment tonight in a 7:05 road game against Sioux Falls. The
Stampede, which has the best record in the 12-team United States Hockey League at 17-3-1, saw its 22-game
home winning streak come to an end Friday night in a 6-5 loss against the Lincoln Stars.
"Sioux Falls is obviously a very dangerous team," Hastings said. "It will be a great test for us."
Hastings said Ray Fraser will draw the start in goal for the Lancers.
