12:2,3,7 God's promise:
I will make you a great nation = promise of child(ren)
  • I will bless you
  • You will be a blessing
  • All peoples will be blessed through you
v.7 To your offspring I will give this land (Canaan)

12:5 Abram goes to Canaan
-- 11:31 Set out to go to Canaan
-- 12:1 The Lord “had” said

12:12ff Abram lied
"Say you are my sister”
Motives: life will be spared and treated well
Results: Abram was treated well, his life was spared,
and Pharaoh's household was plagued
Abraham lied, but God watched out for him
Compare: Psalm 139:16 All the days ordained for me
were written before they came to be.

13:15 God's promise:
Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth
All the land you see will be yours and your offspring's

[Lot: capture and rescue; destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah]

15:4-6 God’s promise:
A son coming from your own body will be your heir
Offspring as many as the stars
Abraham believed the Lord!!

16:2ff Hagar:
"Go, sleep with my maidservant;
perhaps I can build a family through her."
Dilemma: God will make me into a great nation,
but I have no children
Hagar wrongs Sarai; Sarai wrongs Hagar
17:20 Ishmael will be blessed

17:2ff God's promise:
I will establish my covenant with Isaac, Sarah’s son (Circumcision)
17:4-6 You will be a father of many nations
17:10-11 Circumcision will be a sign of the covenant
17:16 I will bless Sarah and surely give you a son by her
Abraham obeyed that very day!!

They laughed
17:17 Abraham laughed—we are old; will I now have
this joy?! (Genesis 25:1 – other wife and sons)
18:12 Sarah laughed—past the age of childbearing;
will I now have this pleasure?! Sarah lied
18:14 Is anything too hard for the Lord?

18:23ff Abraham pleads
Abraham approaches the Lord
Maybe Lot and all his servants --- 50
Maybe Lot and most of his servants --- 45
Maybe Lot and many of his servants --- 40
Maybe Lot and half of his servants --- 30
Maybe Lot and some of his servants --- 20
Maybe Lot and his family and sons-in-law --- 10

20:2 Abraham lied
"She is my sister"
20:9-13 What was your reason for doing this?!
Motive: Fear of death
Abraham assumed that there was no fear of God there
Half truths are still whole lies

21:1 God keeps promise:
Isaac is born at the very time God had promised
21:4 Abraham circumcised Isaac as God had commanded
21:12 It is through Isaac that your offspring
will be reckoned (counted or recorded)

[Hagar]

22:1ff Abraham offered Isaac
God tested Abraham
22:2 Take your beloved, special son and sacrifice him
Abraham went the very next morning
Statements of faith:
22:5 We will go, we will worship, we will come back
22:8 God will provide the lamb
22:10 He reached out his hand and took the knife
to slay his son
Hebrews 11:19 "Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead,
and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death."
22:13-14 God did provide; Abraham called that place
“The Lord Will Provide”

22:17 God's promise:
I swear by Myself that I will bless you
* Your descendants will be as many as the stars and the sand
* They will defeat their enemies
* All nations on earth will be blessed through your seed
Why? Because you have obeyed Me

Doubts:
Fear - “Say you are my sister”
Our emotion when we, or something belonging to us, is threatened
Love drives out fear - 1 John 4:18
- Love protects all things
- Love believes all things
- Love hopes all things
- Love endures all things
Psalm 23:4-5
Paul risked his life
Romans 8:15

Wrong Assumptions - “There is surely no fear of God in this place…”
The definition of an assumption: an idea thought to be true but is unproven
* The world is flat
* An idol is a god

Focused on the wrong thing
God is with us!
Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world (the devil) 1 John 4:4

Circumstances - “The Lord has kept me from having children...”

Skepticism - “Sarah was past the age of childbearing.”
This isn’t Mission Difficult
The Bible is filled with “impossible things”
God is not bound by nature; He set the universe in order!

Faith
God’s promise comes up six times
God’s words remind us
God's words reassure us
God's words renew our minds

Abraham believed!
He will have his own son
He will have Isaac back from the dead

Abraham obeyed!
He circumcised all the males of his household
He reached out to offer Isaac as a sacrifice
