An Investigation into the Spiritual Gift of Tongues: Introduction
With the resurgence of the manifestations of the Spirit, or claims thereof, Christians need to examine the Scriptures and formulate a theology concerning the Holy Spirit in relation to His giving of spiritual gifts in order to evaluate these modern phenomena. Especially pertinent is a proper analysis of speaking tongues as found in the New Testament. The purpose of this paper is to determine a working definition for the word glwssa (tongue), to define the purpose and role of speaking in tongues and its duration, to establish the biblical guidelines for the use of this gift, and to apply these things to today’s circumstances.
