The Holy Spirit has been the most mysterious and neglected member of the Trinity of God. However, the Bible provides clear descriptions of the work of the Holy Spirit, His personhood, and His deity. 1. I believe the Person of the Holy Spirit is an equal member of the Trinity of God, being divine in both nature and substance. (Eph. 4:30; Acts 5:3-4; Ps. 139:7) 2. I believe the Holy Spirit participated in the creation of the world and now actively participates in the sustaining of all things. (Gen. 1:2; Ps. 104:29-30) 3. I believe the Holy Spirit directly inspired all of the writers as they recorded the Word of God, the Bible. He has worked and does work in the lives of believers to remind them of Jesus’ words and to illuminate the Scriptures so that believers may understand them. (2 Tim. 3:16; Jn. 14:26) 4. I believe the Holy Spirit alone is responsible for convicting sinners in regard to sin, righteous-ness, and judgment at the preaching of the Gospel. (Jn. 16:8-11) 5. I believe the Holy Spirit is able to indwell human bodies. He did so from early times up to the ascension of Jesus Christ only in accordance with God’s purpose and in a temporary way. After the descending of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, He has indwelt and does indwell permanently believers of the true Gospel. (Jdg. 16:20; 1 Sam. 10:6; 1 Cor. 6:19; 2 Tim. 1:14) 6. I believe the Holy Spirit anointed Jesus Christ at His baptism for the work He had been sent to do. The Holy Spirit also anoints believers for good works. (Matt. 3:16; Lk. 4:18, 21; 2 Cor. 1:21; 1 Jn. 2:27) 7.a. I believe the Holy Spirit, at the point of salvation, regenerates the believer by imparting eternal life to his spirit and baptizes the believer into the body of Christ, making him a member of the Church universal. (Rom. 8:11; Titus 3:5; Jn. 3:3-8; 1 Cor. 12:13) 7.b. I believe the Holy Spirit, at the point of salvation, seals the believer to indicate that he belongs to God and becomes a deposit to the believer of his future salvation. (Eph. 4:30; 2 Cor. 1:22) 8. I believe the indwelling Holy Spirit sets believers apart from sin to holiness both positionally before God and experientially through the filling of the Spirit as a result of obedience to the Word of God. The Holy Spirit also intercedes on the behalf of believers when they know not what to pray, and He leads and guides them. (1 Pet. 1:2; Heb. 10:14; Rom. 8:26; Gal. 5:18) 9. I believe the Holy Spirit is able to work through believers to perform supernatural acts such as healings and miracles, to reveal to believers special wisdom and knowledge and the interpretation of tongues, and to speak through believers in prophetic utterances and other tongues. These gifts were used abundantly to establish the message of the Gospel and the ministry of the apostles and thereafter historically appeared much less frequently. None of these gifts are inherent in believers but are instead performed spontaneously by the Holy Spirit according to His good pleasure for the edification of and addition to the Church. (1 Cor. 12:28; 13:8-10, 12; 14:12, 24-25; Heb. 2:4; Acts 2:4-6, 37-41) |
