Soteriology: The Doctrine of Salvation

Salvation is the goal of every religion, whether it is salvation from fleshly desires or from an unhappy afterlife or next life. It is important to understand Biblical soteriology in order to clearly and accurately proclaim the good news of salvation through Jesus and to understand more fully how great our salvation truly is.

1. I believe salvation is wholly the work of God for the individual, including every divine act needed to transfer the believing sinner from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light and to prepare the new convert for future glory. No one can either in whole or in part accomplish salvation for himself; no amount of works, sacraments, or rituals can ever earn salvation. (Phil. 1:28; Col. 1:13; Eph. 2:8-9)

2. I believe God decreed before the creation of the world whom He would draw by irresistible grace to His Son in order that they may be saved. These elect, though predestined to receive salvation, must still hear and believe on the Gospel. (Eph. 1:4-5, 11; 2 Thess. 2:13; Eph. 1:13)

3. I believe salvation can only be obtained through faith in the Gospel. The Gospel is this:
- All have sinned and are incapable of doing otherwise.
- Christ died as a sacrifice for the sins of the whole world and was subsequently raised from the dead.
- All one must do is believe.
(1 Cor. 15:1-4; Eph. 2:8-9)

4. I believe regeneration is that work of the Holy Spirit by which eternal life is imparted to an individual resulting in the birth of a new nature. (Titus 3:5; 2 Cor. 5:17-18)

5. I believe adoption is the act of God that permanently adds a regenerated person to God’s family and that grants that person the position of a son of inheritable age. (Rom. 8:14-17; Eph. 1:5)

6. I believe justification is the act of God as Judge whereby He declares an ungodly sinner righteous before Him as a result of faith in the blood of Jesus Christ. (Rom. 3:22-24)

7. I believe sanctification is the activity of God in which He sets apart the believer at conversion to be made holy, He works by the Holy Spirit–through His Word–to produce an experiential holiness that gradually conforms the believer to Christ’s image, and He sets apart the believer to perfect holiness in eternity. (Jn. 17:17; 1 Thess. 4:1-8; 5:23; Heb. 10:14; 1 Jn. 3:2-6)

8. I believe the same saving grace that God endows on those whom He elected also eternally secures the salvation of those believers, regardless of their deeds after conversion. (Jn. 10:28-29; 1 Cor. 5:5; Heb. 10:23)

9. I believe in the vicarious atonement made by Jesus Christ in the shedding of His blood on our behalf. His death is satisfactory for the penalty of the sins of everyone past, present, and yet to come, but His atonement is only applied to those who put their trust in Him. (1 Pet. 3:18; 1 Jn. 2:2; Rom. 3:25)
