Old Leanach Cottage

Old Leanach Cottage
is just a stone’s throw
East of the Culloden
Visitor Center.

Of course, once I’d
left the FIELD area,
it stopped raining!
LOL.

So, I enjoyed perfectly lovely
weather while checking out
the old cottage.

The original farmhouse of
Leanach survived the battle.

However, it has been restored
several times since then.

Its outbuildings – which
no longer exist –
included the barn
said to have been
the scene of where over
thirty Jacobites were
deliberately burned alive.

The cottage was
inhabited until 1912,
when it was donated to
the Gaelic Society of
Inverness
, which cared
for it until 1944.

Then it was presented
to the National
Trust for Scotland

by the late Hector
Forbes of Culloden.

The roof is thatched
with Heather,
a practice once common
in the Highlands.

Inside, the
original hearth
can still be seen,
along with a
display of several
Jacobite artifacts.

(These “artifacts”
are likely of
VERY little
real value,
since the only
“security” present
are those red ropes!)
