Day 2, July 3rd
Liverpool

“Telling the story of Liverpool's seafaring heritage
and the merchant navy, Merseyside Maritime Museum
is in a former bonded warehouse, part of the historic
Albert Dock on the banks of the River Mersey.
The museum, opened in 1980, tells the story of one of the
world's greatest ports and the people who used it.”

Hey! It was cool!

(Put your MOUSE on the pic!)

The first area we entered was an
exhibit about how port authorities
catch smugglers.

I’d long-ago heard of “Body Packers” – people who ingest balloons or condoms filled with cocaine or other drugs, in order to smuggle them through customs.

But, I never before knew that they had special toilets from which to rinse and retrieve the packets!

What a HOOT!

[I wonder what people thought of me … as I snapped all sorts of pix of this POOPER?! LOL]

They had a lot of “rooms”
set up as complete recreations of
historic areas – sort of
like movie sets with manikins.

There even are “sound tracks”
playing as you wander through
each scene!

It was really, really interesting,
but virtually impossible
to photograph well.

So, here are some pix
from a brochure I bought.

(Yeah. That’s a manikin!)

“At Merseyside Maritime Museum,
you can retrace the steps of the nine million
emigrants who left Liverpool between 1830
and 1930 for new lives in America, Canada,
Australia and New Zealand”

It was pretty amazing
to actually WALK through
scenes from history,
rather than just looking at
displays behind glass.

(I’m thankful that they didn’t
figure out a way to
represent SMELLS when
recreating these areas!)

The Transatlantic Slavery
Exhibit was REALLY eerie!!!

At one point, you walk
through the pitch-dark bowels
of a slave ship …
NO light – whatsoever!

I don’t think that insurance companies
in the US would allow such an exhibit!

It was … IMPRESSIVE.

The WWII “Spirit of the Blitz”
exhibits were really well done.

So were the fabulous
Lusitiania & Titanic exhibits.

The Merseyside
Maritime Museum is
FREE OF CHARGE,
and just around the corner
from the “Beatles Story”
Museum.

I highly recommend it!

NEXT DAY TWO OPTIONS (in order of trip occurrence):
“The Beatles Story” Museum
Visiting the MATHEW STREET where the BEATLES began!
Miscellaneous PUBS in Liverpool.
