Day 3, July 4th
The Landrover Safari
to the Top of Morrone

And NEW FRIENDS!

FIRST: Who are these people?!?! (Not the best of pix! Sorry.)

That’s Lorna & Charles, with their son, Ben. They arrived soon after I did, and also were staying the weekend at Anne’s. They live in Aberdeen, and Charles enjoys golf. Since a golf tournament is part of Braemar’s Gala Week, they are regular visitors. And, once having stayed with Anne, they won’t stay anywhere else!

This is a perfect example of how truly WONDERFUL and fun it is to stay at a B&B. You actually meet and SOCIALIZE with the others staying there. In a Hotel, you have tons of people staying in the rooms around you. But, you never really “meet” them, and certainly don’t get to KNOW them. Staying at a B&B, however, you meet and spend a bit of time with the others lodging there. If you don’t particularly take a “shine” to them, you can still go your separate ways. However, if you find that they’re FUN and interesting to spend time with, you become friends and DO STUFF together!

That’s the case with Charles, Lorna, Ben & I. They were such friendly and interesting people that we soon came to feel like we were all part of a family … Anne’s FAMILY!
And, the FIVE of us ended up spending almost the entire weekend together.

SO. The Landrover Safari!

Friday night we all went to the Tourist Center and joined 30 or 40 others, squeezing into several 4-wheel-drive Landrovers, to enjoy a chauffeured ride up the rugged dirt track leading to the top of Morrone.

(The Braemar Royal Highland games Marathon starts at the game field down in Braemar, and runners RUN up to the top of Morrone, then back to the game field. Personally, I prefer the LANDROVERS! Thank you very much!)

Morrone is both a mountain top
(2900 ft high), and the center of
a unique nature area.

“It has the most extensive and diverse example of a transition between woodland and juniper scrub in the UK.”

The Morrone area includes: Bogs, Marshes, Fens, Heath, Scrub, Alpine and sub-alpine grassland, Broad-leaved deciduous woodland, Inland rocks, Sands, and Permanent snow and ice.

Although we saw several DEER while traveling to the top, once there the only animal life present was COOLIE!

Coolie is Anne’s faithful and incredibly friendly Border Collie!

Upon reaching the top, a Piper was playing,
with the vast panorama of the Grampian Mountains
as his backdrop. It was … SIGH, SWOON …
WONDERFUL!

(Hey! It was wonderful even BESIDE
the fact that the Piper was adorable!
We’re talking MUSIC and
AMBIENCE, dammit!)

Equally wonderful: one of the Landrovers was
stocked with water and WHISKEY.

I had a bit of water. Then, I had a wee tot!

(I’m not at ALL a fan of Scotch. But, it seems
sacrilegious to visit Scotland without having
some whiskey at least ONCE!)

Ben is the most fervent
Coolie Fan on the planet!

All children who meet Coolie
absolutely LUV him.

But, Ben is “Coolie’s Boy”
through and through.

I took several pix o’ Ben and Kidz playing with Coolie at the top of Morrone. To see that page,
