Day 4, July 5th
Braemar Castle

After the Kirkyard, I continued my hike until I came to Braemar Castle.
The map below shows an arrow at Braemar Castle. I’ve inserted an arrow at the
FOOTBRIDGE I used to cross over the river on my “short cut” hike!
And, Anne’s home is approximately at the un-pointy end of that arrow.

The Castle is very close to the little highway that leads into Braemar from the East, about
1/2 mile before entering the village. (So, it’s less than a mile from Anne’s house, via the
“short cut” path over the river!) But, Braemar Castle cannot be SEEN from the highway
because of the immensely tall trees that surround it. (Suz & I drove past it at least twice,
but NEVER noticed it!)

This pic of Braemar Castle is scanned
from the brochure I bought there.

During my trip with Susan last September,
I learned that it’s REALLY SILLY
to try to take pix of stuff as large as
a CASTLE with my little camera!

So, for all of the grand places I visited on
this trip, I bought the BROCHURE.

Thus, I’ve often scanned professional pix
from brochures for MY trip Website “album” –
occasionally also using pix from
Websites about these amazing places.

THIS is the
ONLY pic
I took of
Braemar Castle.

Compared to some of the places that Suz & I
visited in September, this is a “small” castle.

But, OH, it was still heavenly to visit!

Situated amidst the magnificent splendor
of the Cairngorms on Royal Deeside, 1/2
mile north east of Braemar on the A93,
this L-plan fairy-tale Castle is an impressive
fortress that has seen its share of troubles
over the years.

The current structure was built in 1628
by John Erskine, 7th Earl of Mar, on the site of
an even older habitation,
the long ruined Kindrochit Castle.

In 1689, an enemy clan leader, John Farquharson
(the "Black Colonel" of Inverey), attacked and
burned the Castle, thereafter claiming it as his own.

Thus, Braemar Castle has been the ancestral home
of Clan Farquharson for over 300 years.

If you’d like to read more about
Braemar Castle,
and see pix of several rooms
– such as the old vaulted
kitchen pictured at right –
and the rooms containing
MUSEUM-like
collections o’ fabulous stuff …
