Day 9,
July 10th
INCREDIBLE
Caerlaverock
Castle
PIX Snagged
from
The Internet

This is a CLOSE-UP
pic of the carved stone
above the front entrance.

There are intricate
stone carvings
throughout the
ENTIRE castle.

It is amazing that
they’ve survived,
and retained such
DETAIL, to this day!

“Dividing wall and blocked portcullis chamber” found within the Gatehouse

Inside the Eastern (of the two North-facing) Gatehouse Tower

Rear of the Gatehouse Section, Viewed from the Interior Courtyard

All the courtyard doors and windows are topped by elaborate carvings.
The triangular tops (ground floor) represent Maxwell family heraldic achievements.
The rounded ones of the floors above depict scenes from classical mythology.

View of the East Range from the Interior Courtyard
“A door leads from the foot of the stair to the three vaulted cellars in the East Range. The kitchen,
with its large fireplace (a “modern” rebuild), occupies the central vault. There was a ‘servery’ in the
southern end and a bakehouse in the northern end. Each of the three floors above had two rooms,
most with latrine closets(!)

Exterior View of the East Range (viewed from the Southeast)
The large windows knocked through the eastern curtain wall tell us that security was no longer
a major issue during the early 1600s. Presumably, the Union of the Crowns in 1603
had brought peace to the border country for the first time in centuries.”

View of the West Range from the Interior Courtyard

Exterior View of the West Range and Murdoch’s Tower
(viewed from the Southwest)

Murdoch’s Tower
“is capped by an
impressive
rib-vaulted roof,
also added in the
15th century.”
