Day 9, July 10th MY PIX o’ CAERLAVEROCK CASTLE

FIRST, check this out: The weekend BEFORE my Caerlaverock visit (July 5th & 6th) there was an ANNUAL “SPECTACULAR JOUSTING TOURNAMENT” held at Caerlaverock Castle! I KNEW that when I was rapidly planning my trip. But, I ELECTED to SKIP THAT EVENT, so I could VISIT ANNE and enjoy the Braemar Gala Week. I do NOT regret my decision – for a couple reasons: #1: I really, really wanted to visit Anne & enjoy Braemar again – which I did! #2: There were over 3000 people crammed into the Caerlaverock Castle area for that event! Although I know I’d have enjoyed the event, I don’t mind having missed that “CRUSH”!

But! I’ll tell you right now! Caerlaverock Castle is the PERFECT place to hold a REN FEST!
DANG!!! Caerlaverock is SPECTACULAR!!!

Caerlaverock is FULL of little cubbies and dark passages … and you get to wander through ALMOST ALL of them without being restrained by “guides” or the like! Yeah. There are areas that haven’t been made “safe” for wandering YET! (They’re barred, so you can’t get into them). But MOST of the ruins have already been reinforced for safety – and they’re working on the rest!

These pix don’t really NEED an “explanation” – they’re simply GRAND!

“The south-west tower, known as Murdoch's Tower survives to its full height.

This is where Murdoch, Duke of Albany, was held prisoner on a charge of high treason. The ground floor chamber is now entered by a door from the South Range, but originally it was only accessible through a trap door in the floor above, suggesting it's possible use as a prison.”

The remains of these steps leading up into Murdoch’s Tower remind me of the steep steps leading up to Minas Morgul and Shelob’s Lair!
