PLACEBO: "ONCE MORE WITH FEELING"
Grade: A
Placebo is one of the great alternative bands of the past decade. The fact that they have yet to "hit it big" in America may be attributed to the fact that Brian Molko, the band's androgynous lead singer, has a penchant for glam rock -- something Europeans eat up while Americans scrunch their faces. Music fans who take exception to the bands listed on the Billboard Top 10 take note: There is more to this band than "Pure Morning" and showy fashion statements. Placebo's Britrock is a worthy successor to the melancholic sentiment expressed by defunct alternative bands such as Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins. The "Once More with Feeling" DVD features all of the band's videos since 1996, many of which have rarely been aired stateside. The sound and quality of these never-boring videos, each featuring band commentary, is crisp and clean. The DVD also contains a fascinating interview with the band that covers most of its history -- from interesting, innocuous anecdotes, to the ludicrous controversy at the Sanremo music festival (where the band was in all the Italian papers because Molko smashed a guitar into an amp) to the spat between Placebo and Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst.
