Brian played the role of Malcolm, the leader singer of the fictional New York Dolls-style band "The Flaming Creatures". Steve played Billy, the drummer of the same band. Stefan was a nameless member of Polly Small's band and only appeared on screen (in a wig!) for a few brief seconds. Xavior Roide (a former member of Placebo's on-stage band) played Pearl, the bassist of The Flaming Creatures.

Quotes Brian has said about Velvet Godmine & Placebo's involvemnt in the film:
"Steve and I are in a band called the Flaming Creatures, who I think are vaguely based on the New York Dolls."
"Here I was in this ridiculous '70s garb, with a top hat and glitter make-up, and all of a sudden I find myself on stage, and Ewan McGregor and Michael Stipe are the audience. I find myself without the guitar, not having done very much research into how frontmen danced in the '70s, and I absolutely shat myself. Steve, our drummer, showed me some '70s moves and I just had to dive in."
"But there were lots of lovely little moments during filming. I remember being in the make-up trailer next to Ewan McGregor who's got his Iggy wig on. I'd ask what scene he'd be filming and he tell me he was scared s--tless. I loved the fact that I could turn around and say: 'Don't worry, Ewan, you'll be fine'."
