PEASANT
TROUSERS
(“BREECHES”)

SHORT

or

LONG

For the Peasant Trousers
and sherts I’ve made
(pictured above, and elsewhere),
I used a Simplicity pattern:
SIMPLICITY 8749.

It’s pretty much a pattern
for “Hospital Scrub” shirtS & pants!

ANY loose-fitting trouser pattern will work for Peasant Trousers, however.
If you’ve got something like that – USE IT!
Just use cheapo, medium-weight, woven fabric.

If you DON’T want to use a PATTERN, go to
Dawn’s Costume Guide to “SIMPLE DRAWSTRING BREECHES!”

What I’ve printed below are the directions I wrote for myself –
so I wouldn’t forget what I figured out when I last made the trousers! (LOL)
If they make sense to you, USE THEM!

If using Simplicity 8749,
you only need
pattern pieces
#12 and #13.
(Pants Front & Back)

Fabrics I’ve used for Peasant Trousers
Types o’

Fabric To Use

“Dirt” or
“Earth” colors …
medium-weight …
woven fabrics are best.

“Patterned” Fabric will
work, as long as it’s
woven.

3 yards of Fabric will make one pair o’ Medium Trousers,
and one pair o’ X-Large Trousers – leaving fabric left over for patches or pouches.
EITHER of these TWO Trousers can be long or short.
You can get two pair o’ Medium Trousers from 3 yards of fabric.
But You CANNOT get two pair o’ X-Large Trousers from 3 yards of fabric.

My directions are for One Medium and One X-Large Pair o’ Trousers
One Long, and One Short … From 3 Yards o’ Fabric

CUTTING DIRECTIONS

Open fabric up & fold one side’s selvedge edge back on itself.
CUT Long trousers 12 & 13.
Open fabric to upside-down-T. Fold top of T down to selvedge edge.
Selvedges = “bottom” of short trouser 12.
(You won’t need to “hem” a selvedge bottom!)
Measure 2 ½ inches from Length Alter Lines and align on selvedges.
CUT.
Open and refold remaining fabric.
Fold over bottom of short trouser 13 at 2 ¾ inches from
Length Alter Lines (need ¼ inch hem).
CUT.

Mark all RIGHT SIDES if not obvious.

SEWING DIRECTIONS

Seal Edges with Zig-Zag … STRETCH curved crotch sections while finishing.
(Make ¼ inch “hem” of short trousers 13 at same time, if selvedge wasn’t available.)

Sew one Front (12) piece to a Back (13) piece at INNER LEG SEAM:
(Right Sides Together!)
leaving bottom open approximately 3”
Repeat with the other two pieces.

Pin center seam, matching inner leg seam and notches, & SEW:
(Right Sides Together!)
LEAVE last 1 ½ inches of the FRONT (small notch piece)
open for Draw String Opening!

STRETCH when sewing curved sections (crotch).

Pin front to back at side seams & SEW:
(Right Sides Together!)
leaving bottom open approximately 3”

Turn Right Side Out

Fold open seam of top Draw String Opening & Openings at the bottom of side seams.
Press edges back, and Zig-Zag in place down one side & back up the other side.

Fold over top edge (Wrong Sides Together) 1 ½ inches all the way around.
Sew ¼ inch from the top all the way around.

Place Draw String inside unfinished casing,
with the ends extending out of the front Draw String Opening area.
String should be approximately 3” longer than the circumference of the fabric, on each end.
Pin in place and sew starting at top of center back seam,
SEWING OVER Draw String to anchor it at the center back.
Then, finish by sewing bottom of casing ¼ inch from the bottom all the way around.

Mark SIZE on the trousers inside of center back seam with black fabric marker.

For Trousers without Selvedge-edges: hem bottom.
