POUCH
FLAPS |

ELABORATE

First: Decide upon the
CUT:
- 1 Flap Shape of the “Top” Fabric
- 1 Flap Shape of sturdy “Underneath” Fabric
- 1 Flap Shape of “Interfacing” – ONLY if TOP Fabric is not “sturdy”
(If both Top and Underneath Fabrics are “sturdy,” Interfacing is Not Needed.)
DECORATE The FLAP
If you want Flap Decorations – APART FROM
|
Fringe and/or
Edging-Trim Stuff
(such as ribbons,
laces, and the like) –
Sew Such Stuff
onto the
Flap Top FIRST. |
(Detail of lace-cased ribbon on
Myne Pouch Flap) |
SEW FLAP sections together:
- Place UNDERNEATH fabric, Right-Side-UP, on a surface.
- Place TOP Fabric Right-Side-DOWN on top of that.
- Place Interfacing (if used) on top of that.
Pin and Sew ALMOST all the way around the edges
(presser-foot-width from edge):
- For Square or Rectangular pieces, leave “Top” of Flap OPEN.
- For ROUND Flaps, leave approximately 2” OPEN at the “Top” of the Flap.
CLIP FABRIC at Specific Points:
This technique allows for a better appearance when the piece is turned Right-Side-Out.
- CLIP OFF “points” of the corners or tips of the Square or Rectangular flap’s sewn portion. (Don’t Clip Through the Sewn Thread!)
- For ROUND Flaps: Make a Straight Cut (“clip”) from the outside edge toward the sewn seam, all around the sewn portion of the Flap, being careful not to Clip Into the Sewn Seam.
Pull the Sewn Piece Right-Side-Out
Grasp the “Right Side” of either the Top or Underneath fabric (by reaching into the opening you left), and Pull the Piece Right-Side-Out.
Ensure that all seam-edges & corners (points) are “pushed out” …
then PRESS Nice & Flat.
CLOSE OPENINGS:
- For Square or Rectangular pieces, Zig-Zag open edges together. (You can turn the edges IN if you want. I don’t bother.)
- For ROUND Flaps: Tuck edges of opening inside (forming a nice “round” shape), and Top-Sew all around the edge.

If you want to do
FRINGE
and/or
EGING-TRIM
Stuff,
DO IT NOW.
Sew FRINGE onto bottom
edge of Flap first.
Sew Edging-Trim
on top of that.
(You can Edge the entire piece,
or just the “bottom” portions of it,
as pictured here.) |
|
I like to use up “left-over” bits & pieces from other fringed/edged projects on my pouches –
Makes for a nice variety of trims, and uses stuff that would otherwise be thrown away!
Attach the FLAP To The POUCH
|
Turn Pouch Body INSIDE-OUT …
With the End of the Flap Parallel to
the Top Edge of the Pouch Body,
Center the Flap on the
Center-Back of Pouch (With
RIGHT-SIDES-TOGETHER)
And SEW Flap-End to
Pouch, Just Below
the Draw String Casing
(Without sewing over
the Draw String.) |
|
That way, when the Pouch is Turned Right-Side-Out,
and the Flap is Flipped Right-Side-Up (over the front of the pouch),
NO SEAM-EDGES SHOW from where the Flap is attached to the Pouch.
