Day 7:
July 8th,
2003
INVERNESS
CASTLE

Inverness Castle is perched on top of a hill
immediately behind the Tourist Center
where I was supposed to meet my
Loch Ness Tour Bus.

I arrived an hour or more before the
time to catch my tour bus, but too early
to actually TOUR the Drum Tower.

So, I grabbed some breakfast and coffee,
and just wandered about outside the castle.

Obviously, my camera is inadequate for taking pix of
structures as big as castles. Unfortunately, the only
pix I could find on the Internet were rather small.
Above RIGHT you can see the statue of Flora MacDonald, who is considered
a National Hero for having disguised Bonnie Prince Charly as her maid
and smuggling him (after Culloden) to where he could catch a boat to France.

Oooh! I just found two LARGE Inverness Castle Pix on the Internet!

I took this pic while eating
my breakfast in one of the circular
viewpoints built into the wall that
surrounds the entire hilltop and castle.

As you can see (below)
I made some
NEW FRIENDS
while there!

(Put your MOUSE on the pic!)

Across the River Ness
from Inverness Castle is
Saint Andrew's Cathedral.

Apparently, it was
originally intended
to have SPIRES atop
the two towers, but
the money ran out!

Below you can see
the gorgeous townhouses
that face the west bank
of the River Ness.

Speaking of
TOWNHOUSES!

Here come pix
of the SIDE and
REAR of the
“Townhouse”
shown on the City
Center pix page,
taken from my
breakfast perch.

I’m not an
architect or historian
(don’t play one on TV,
didn’t stay in a
Holiday Inn Express
last night)!

But, clearly,
this structure consists
of many, many
different “ages”
of architecture.

Additionally,
the oldest bits
are loaded with
stained glass
windows.

However, I never
came close enough
to them to tell
whether they
have “religious”
motifs, or not.

BUT!!!

The section that
appears to be built
of the oldest brick,
clearly contains
crosses!

I suspect that this
section may have
been an abbey or
monastery garden
wall, before a
second story was
slapped on top.

At ANY Rate: This little “mystery” kept me well occupied until time to catch the BUS!

Next DAY SEVEN Pix Options (in order of trip occurrence):
