WHAT IS FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT?

A planned process in which the ongoing activities undertaken in the classroom increase student engagement and learning by providing  timely informational feedback and decision-making data so students can adjust current learning tactics in which they employ and teachers can modify instructional methods in which they implement.                                                            

Formative Assessment includes:

Formative assessment in the classroom promotes the New Hope School District’s vision to support engaged learning and student achievement and the district’s mission to provide relevant research-based instruction that responds to each student’s unique potential.  Before promoting a new formative assessment initiative, there needs to be open dialogue with key staff to come to an agreement on what formative assessment should look like in each building – as there is no one-size-fits-all model, each building needs the best fit.  Resources also need to be allocated to support quality professional development opportunities.  Additionally, staff will need to be provided with the necessary time for implementation and to develop formative assessment techniques.

This new website for the New Hope School District will be the portal for information on programs, policies, initiatives and important decisions that impact the school community.  Its role will be to promote the formative assessment initiative and the website will be one tool used to do that.  The website will provide links to currently available information on formative assessment.  It will include valid and accurate data to link formative assessment to increased student achievement.  Also, it will highlight best practices currently being implemented throughout the district.

Ideally, this formative assessment website will allow educators currently using formative assessment the opportunity to share their thoughts, suggestions and tips on the implementation and maintenance of formative assessment programs at the classroom level. Additionally, the website provides an area to use a message board forum to post questions and answers on formative assessment.  Overall, this website is a link that connects research to practice.

To promote an understanding of formative assessment among community members, community-based information sessions will be announced on the website.  There are also links to professional development materials for staff.
