Provincial Cadet Speak - Off
2003 - 2004
In December 2003, cadets from all across
Newfoundland and Labrador converged on St. John’s for one of the largest
public speaking competition for cadets ever held in the province. Each
cadet was given five minutes to speak on a selection of topics provided
prior to the event.
Among those participating in the
event was our very own Cdt. Jim O'Keefe. For the competition Cdt. O'Keefe
spoke about the _______________. Jim prepared and presented his speech
in an excellent fashion and although it did not earn him a provincial award
we are proud of him for his accomplishment and ability as a public speaker.
Congratulations Jim, you represented you corps well.
2002 - 2003

event was our very own Mcpl Jeremy Moore. For the competition Mcpl Moore
spoke about the Army Cadet Summer Training Program. Jeremy prepared and
presented his speech in an excellent fashion and although it did not earn
him a provincial award we are proud of him for his accomplishment and ability
as a public speaker. Congratulations Jeremy, you represented you corps
well.
2002
On Saturday, 16 Feb 2002, cadets from
all across Newfoundland and Labrador converged on St. John’s for the largest
public speaking competition for cadets ever held in the province. Each
cadet was given five minutes to speak on one of the following topics: “Canada:
A Nation of Peacekeepers," “How September 11th, 2001 has affected me,”
“I’m proud to be a (Sea, Army or Air) Cadet.”
Among those participating in the
event was our very own Mcpl Teresa Griffin. For the competition Mcpl Griffin
selected the topic: "I'm proud to be an Army Cadet." Teresa prepared and
presented her speech in excellent fashion and although it did not earn
her a provincial award we are proud of her for her accomplishment and ability
as a public speaker. Congratulations Teresa, you represented you corps
well.
2001
During the 2001 training year,
2558 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps Placentia held their second annual
corps annual speak off. The topic for the event was: "What Veterans Mean
to Me." All cadets did an excellent job, but Master Corporal Katie McCarthy,
came away with first place. A few weeks later McCarthy advanced to the
provincial speak off held in St. John's. Here a number of army, air, and
sea cadets from all - over Newfoundland and Labrador, competed. McCarthy
presented her speech very well and received a participation award. Congratulations
Katie, you represented you corps well.
2000
During the month of March 2000,
2558 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps Placentia held their first annual
speak off. All cadets did an excellent job, but Master Warrant Rebecca
O'Keefe, came away with first place. A few weeks later O'Keefe advanced
to the provincial speak off held in St. John's. Here 41 army, air, sea
cadets from all - over Newfoundland and Labrador, competed. O'Keefe made
it to the top five finalists, and advanced to speak at the Awards Dinner.
During the function, special guest, the Honourable Judy Foote, Minister
of Education, gave an inspiring speech to the young speakers.
At the end of the night MWO O'Keefe
walked away with the title of "Top Newfoundland and Labrador Army Cadet".
We here at 2558 RCACC are very proud of MWO O'Keefe Rebecca for this
accomplishment. As well congratulations to all the other competitors at
the competition.
