Norma, thanks for the the family information. My name is Judy Baird Bedford. My great grand father was Samuel W. Baird of Jackson Co., Georgia. His son was Henry Baird and my dad Zeanos was the son of Henry who had 6 other children: Lily Mae, Bessie, Nettie, Carlton, Clydell and Ritta Nell. On the family portraits page of bairdnet. the picture of Howard D. Baird, the basball player looks so much like my dad. My grand father Henry said his parents were from Ireland. While visiting Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. to follow up some research on the 26th Alabama members buried there, I took photos of the headstones of other members of Alabama Regiments buried there. If some family members would like this photo, contact me!

Samuel W. Baird (18 May 1820, Fairfield County, SC - 4 Feb 1899, Jackson County, GA) served the Confederate States Army in the Civil War with H, Co. 16th GA Cavalry and H, Co. 13th GA Cavalry(same unit, just changed names). There will be a grave dedication in March or April of 2005 to honor his service at Zion Baptist Church in Braselton, GA. It is exit # 129 off of I-85. Turn right and then take the first left. The cemetery will be on the left. Everyone is invited to attend. The Sons of Confederate Veterans in Georgia will be performing the ceremony, and many members of our family will be there. We would like to invite everyone in the community and county to attend as well. I will post more information when I know more. Enlistment History: Samuel W. Baird enlisted in the Confederate States Army as a Private at Jefferson, GA on September 19, 1863.He enlisted into Johnson's Rangers, Hotel Company 16th Georgia Cavalry. The 16th Georgia Cavalry did a lot of fighting in Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina throughout the Civil War. Private Samuel W. Baird started fighting on the very day that he enlisted at Raccoon Ford, VA. On September 21-22,1863, he fought at Madison Court House, VA. On September 23,1863, he fought at Robertson's Ford, VA. From October 9-22,1863 he was involved in the Bristoe Campaign, which involved James City, VA and Buckland Mills, VA. On November 7-8, 1863,he fought at Rappahannock River, VA and Kelly's Ford, VA. On November 18, 1863, he fought at Germania Ford, VA. On November 26-30, 1863, he was involved in the Mine Run Campaign, which involved New Hope Church, VA, Mine Run, VA, and Parker's Store,VA. There was a two-month break from the fighting, and on Februar! y 6-7, 1864, he fought in Rapidan, VA and Morton's Ford,VA. The fighting stopped for three months for the 16th Georgia Cavalry. The fighting started again on May 4-June 24, 1864, this was called the Wilderness Campaign and it involved many engagements at: Wilderness, VA, Brock Road, VA, Todd's Tavern,VA, Corbin's Bridge, VA, Spottsylvania Court House, VA, Laurel Hill, VA, Fredericksburg Road, VA, James River, VA, Ground Squirrel Church, VA, South Anna River, VA, Yellow Tavern, VA, Pamunkey River, VA, Hanover Junction, VA, Haw's Shop, VA, Enon Church, VA, Totopotomoy River, VA, Hanover Court House, VA, Ashland, VA, Mechup's Creek, VA, Cold Harbor, VA, Trevillian Station, VA, Newark, VA, Petersburg, VA, Richmond, VA, Black Creek, VA, and White House, VA. On June 28-29, 1864, he fought at Stony Creek, VA and Ream's Station, VA. On August 18-21,1864, he fought at Globe Tavern, VA and Black's Station, VA. The fighting ceased for about a month, and then it picked up again on September 3! 0-October 1, 1864, where he fought at Arthur's Swamp, VA. On October 27-28, 1864, he fought at Boydton Plank Road, VA, which was part of Hatcher's Run, VA. On November 28-December 3, 1864 he fought at Stony Creek Station,VA. On December 7-12, 1864, he fought at Hicksford, VA. There was another month of rest from the fighting, and on February1-April 26, 1865, he was involved in the Carolinas Campaign, which included: Angley's Post Office, SC, Williston, SC, White Post, SC, North Edisto River, SC, Columbia, SC, West Cross Roads, SC, Stroud's Mills, SC, Cloud's House, SC, Cheraw, SC,Big Black Creek, SC, Blakeny, SC, Himsborough, SC, Blue Ridge,SC, Montoe's Cross Roads, SC, Benton's Cross Roads, NC, Bentonville, NC, Hannah's Creek, NC, Moccasin Creek, NC, Gulley, NC, Moccasin Swamp, NC, and Smithville, NC. He fought withCorporal Walter Leander Gee in the Carolinas Campaign. They surrendered on April 26, 1865 at Bennet's House, Durham Station, NC after learning of the Confederate surrender on April 9, 1865. Private Samuel W. Baird was discharged in Augusta, GA.
