Subject: Burns family in Franklin Co. PA

I was looking for a lost ancestor and came across your website do you know anything about what Burns' there may have been in and around the Chambersburg, Franklin Co. PA between 1860-1920 My 4th great grandfather's(David Mutersbaugh) obit says he was survived by a brother John Mutersbaugh and a sister Caroline Burns both of near Chambersburg, Franklin Co. PA I've looked at the 1920 census as he died in 1925 but the only Caroline Burns I've been able to find that makes sense seems to trace back to a Caroline Burns wife of Andrew Burns both listed as Mulatto which doesn't figure in since the pics I have of David/ Daniel and his civil war records and census's all show him as white so I'm trying to figure out who this Caroline was married to and where they came from. We always thought our David/Daniel was born in Mt. Green, Franklin Co. PA but recently found his civil war pension papers that he stated he was born in Shippensburg, Cumberland Co. PA so my guess would be that the Burns that Caroline met and married was likely from the same area since Shippensburg stradels the Cumberland / Franklin Co. Line.

The problem I'm having is that my 4th great grandfather just appears married in the 1860 census no indication of where he came from or any family he might have I can't find him in the 1850 census. There's a family with the right names up in Lewistown PA but I've eliminated them as their David/Daniel is still in the home in 1860 when mine is already in Spring Run, Franklin Co. PA. I've also looked at the family of Frederick Mutersbaugh/paugh but I've spoken to descendents of that Caroline (Burns) and they tell me she didn't marry a Burns so she's also elusive as is my David/Daniel Mutersbaugh prior to the 1860 census. I was hoping you might have heard of a marriage between a Caroline Mutersbaugh and a Burns sometime between 1850-1925.

JOHN BURNS (probable brother to my JAMES BURNS ESQ of Mifflin Co) b. 1742 PA d. 7/7/1791 Franklin Co PA m. 12/26/1771 Franklin Co PA to JEAN DENNY (JOHN DENNY) b. 9/14/1745 Lancaster PA d. 4/12/1827 Clear Creek Twp, Ashland OH S: 1) WALTER BURNS (JOHN) b. abt 1780 Cumberland/Franklin PA d. 1849 Shortcreek, Ohio Co W(VA) m. abt 1802 Washington Co PA. 2) JAMES BURNS SR (JOHN) m. FRANCES B BEYMER

JEAN DENNY'S father, JOHN DENNY b. abt 1720 Chester Co PA d. 10/15/1782 Cumberland PA m. abt 1744 Lancaster/Chester Co PA

Re: Iowa

I would imagine since the BURNS Family had a lot of History in Franklin Co, (Robert, James Esq. etc.) that perhaps someone might have some knowledge of what became of them . If I could put DANIEL BURNS as being born in Franklin Co, it would help solve some mystery . All census on DANIEL BURNS have him born in OH . I know there are photos of JOHN BURNS at the Valley of the Shadow Site , And this would probably be ELIZABETH'S Father . If not then ALEXANDER would be her father and JOHN, her uncle . They both have daughters in her age range on the early Franklin Co, Census.

My BURNS ancestor was from Franklin County PA, born about 1805. I believe she had brothers, WILLIAM BURNS and HENRY BURNS, among others. There is also a connection to a DANIEL BURNS from Miami OH. I can trace the BURNS family back to JOHN BURNS in the mid 1700s and later an ALEXANDER BURNS who was probably his son, all living in Montgomery Twp, Franklin Co, PA. I would love to find the connection between the Franklin Co PA and the Miami Co OH BURNS Families.

My Ancestor ELIZABETH BURNS married JACOB BECK. They lived in Mercersburg Twp, Franklin County PA and had about 12 children.

JACOB BECK died in 1848 and the widow ELIZABETH BURNS BECK is living with some of her children in Mercersburg in 1850.

On the Census is a HARRIET BECK and her 3 young children, living with ELIZABETH BURNS BECK. HARRIET BECK was married to JOHN BECK who was born 1825 and died 1850.

In 1850 ELIZABETH Burns' son HENRY BECK is living with DANIEL BURNS in Miami OH and HANNAH BECK and SARAH BECK are living with ANN and JOHN REIVER (should be REIBER) misspelled on the Census. This is ANNA BURNS REIBER(?) also in Miami OH .

I have seen her on Family Trees as ANNA BECK REIBER, widow of JACOB, but this is not true, and none of the people I have written to about this have written back to me.

I don't know what happened to ELIZABETH BURNS BECK after 1850. In 1860 here are her Children: WILLIAM BECK (JACOB & ELIZABETH BURNS), SAMUEL BECK (JACOB & ELIZABETH BURNS), HEZEKIAH BECK (JACOB & ELIZABETH BURNS), DAVID BECK (JACOB & ELIZABETH BURNS), MARY BECK (JACOB & ELIZABETH BURNS) and MARGARET BECK (JACOB & ELIZABETH BURNS). All in Mercersburg Twp .

In Montgomery Twp is JACOB BECK'S brother PETER BECK. Then in 1870 My Great-great Grandfather HEZEKIAH BECK is living in Montgomery Twp. WILLIAM BECK and DAVID BECK are in Mercersburg Twp. SAMUEL BECK is in Ohio and I have no idea where any one else is. It would help if I knew how they connected to Ohio .

HEZEKIAH, WILLIAM and DAVID after Burns' that were born close in years to ELIZABETH BURNS BECK. HEZEKIAH BURNS was born in 1808. I imagined they were her brothers, but I've only found WILLIAM BURNS, living close to her in Franklin County. I don't know what became of HEZEKIAH BURNS, if these are any that you have come across could you please let me know.

I also forgot to mention that in 1850 HEZEKIAH BECK age 10 is living with IRWIN BENNETT and wife MARGARET. This is believed to be MARGARET BURNS, daughter of WILLIAM BURNS. The BENNETT'S are in Peters Twp FRANKLIN CO. Thanks, KATHY

I have pictures of almost everyone from CHARLOTTE, SARA GARDNER WILSON, and BLANCHE on down.

Below are copies of letters from CHARLOTTE that are owned by a relative, and are dated in the 1840's.

In 1849 CHARLOTTE became blind and was for then on known as the "Blind Grandmother". CHARLOTTE'S grave was missing for over 100 years. The stone was broken and because there were no records, no one knew who was buried at that grave.

THOMAS M FREITAS submitted a copy of the family Bible that states the following: "CHARLOTTE G WILSON died Sept 7 in 1874 "Blind Grandmother" in Great Peace near Filmore Co Nebraska. Buried in Grafton, Nebraska age 86 years."

Then later in the Bible, under BLANCHE EDITH EVANS' name it states: "BLANCHE EDITH EVANS died July 5, 1880 buried beside "Blind Grandmother" in Grafton, Nebraska" Because BLANCHE EDITH EVANS' stone is still there, the Nebraska Historical Society accepted that the broken stone next to BLANCHE had to be that of CHARLOTTE SARA WILSON.

Letters from CHARLOTTE WILSON:

The original of the letter below was written by CHARLOTTE WILSON to her daughter MARY JANE BURNS in July of 1840 and is now in possession of CHARLES & MILDRED JONES.

_____________________________________________________

Our Dear JANE;

We received your welcome letter and most sincerely congratulate you on your safe arrival at your home that is far distant West. and we also rejoice that your health and that of your husband, or dear BURNS is mercifully continued. Likewise we are happy to learn that your husband's kindness and attention is likely to console you for the want of us.

My dear girl, our health has been very precarious - Your Papa has been very unwell since you left here.

Poor VIRGINIA droops, so me forlorn thing. CAROLINE keeps up her spirits better than any of us. Your Papa feels your loss severely; for my part, I miss you more then I am willing to acknowledge to anyone. In the evening I miss you and in the morning I mechanically walk into the room to awaken you and then when I think of the distance which separates us, my heart is ready to burst, but I think I hear you say for shame mother, be yourself and do not repine. I will try but I am free to tell you that the mirth and levity you witnessed before you left was foreign to my heart and since you ask me, I have fallen considerable below zero.

My dear JANE, you ask what the neighbors have to say and I can tell you they all make inquiries and appear to wish you well and regret that they were not better acquainted with you. While here some of them have been busy hunting out BURNS' character and connections and found that he is cousin to HOLMAN but this is not worth writing about, and now for other particulars - - - -

The horse you left has gotten no better but worse. He has not been good for anything since SAM rode him to Chambersburg he cannot travel 5 rods without blowing like a porpoise and at the present time he would not bring five dollars.

I am afraid you will find it hard to get up housekeeping; Papa cannot assist you at this time

(PART OF ORIGINAL PAGE IS MISSING HERE)

but there is no money in the reaping. WILLIAM CALHOUN advanced his own money to pay the hands and instead of eighty dollars a month, which is his regular wage, he will get it in 2 months. The times are uncommonly dull and he will have to stop work for a while.

You mentioned that BURNS could borrow some money. I think if he could get it for a year it would be better and as Papa can get his business arranged he may try to help you I know yet what he will do with the horse but he will try and do the best he can.

I can tell you no more at present. Our dear MARY JANE, how I long to see you once more, it is likely I never may, so may the ALMIGHTY DISPOSER of events take you under his care and keeping, and may HIS HOLY ANGELS guard you over the years, you and your dear BURNS, now and ever.

CHARLOTTE S WILSON

P.S. VIRGINIA and CARLOINA send their love and wish a place in your memory. My thanks to SAMUEL'S (BURNS?) mother and sister for their kind reception of you.

Please write soon and let us know how you are getting along. When I write again I will be more particular.

Your MOTHER

The original of the letter below was written by CHARLOTTE WILSON to her daughter MARY JANE BURNS on February 9, 1841 and is now in possession of CHARLES & MILDRED JONES.

My Dear JANE;
Your welcome letter came to hand yesterday, and gladly did we pursue its contents; and in the first place we congratulate you through the bounty of a kind providence that your health is continued, also that of your husband.

We hope that you have found father, mother, and sisters all in his kind attentions to your welfare. My dear MARY, we too are in health.

Only yesterday CAROLINE had a fall from a horse on which herself, VIRGINIA, & MAGGY HAWTHORN were riding to school, just at CAMPBELL'S Damn. CAROLINE was badly hurt. Mr. CAMPBELL had her carried in and it was a long time before she came to herself. Her head is badly cut but she is now better.

Papa has better health then he had at the beginning of winter and for myself, I am entirely well though I labor occasionally under depression of spirits which you know is not my temperament in general.

And now my dear JANE, I might as well tell you our concerns as well as I can. Papa has sold his house and lot to SALLY & BETSEY BRINDLE and we must remove on the first of April and I don't yet know where we will go unless to the shanty as he has taken the turn for this year. The times are exceeding hard and money scarce.

(REST OF PAGE MISSING)...

I wish BURNS would look a little about and if he thinks there is any situation that would suit us, on shares or rent he would write soon and let us know for I long, oh so fervently, to leave Pennsylvania and to see you once more.

My dear JANE, you forgot to tell us what was the matter with the fulling mill which caused SAMUEL to leave it and teach school, and you forgot to say if you were going to leave the place as SAM mentioned in one of your letters he thought he should on account of the scarcity of water for said mill and I wish you would write immediately and satisfy us.

CAROLINE wants much to go to you and if you had business at your trade she would be of use to you and also to herself and we want you to write if you think there could be any use supposing we could get any mode of conveyance for her; if not tell us candidly.

My dear MARY, I had knitted a pair of white woolen stockings for you to have sent if Papa had gone and also some other little things. (REST OF PAGE IS MISSING)...

I am happy that you are trying to improve your mind, which you are a little late about, but never mind - you can do it yet with diligence. I think how you regret the want of books, but recollect observation of and a habit of thinking will do a great deal, but pardon me when I tell you that you must not think as you used to do when at home with folded hands; keep them busily employed and that will both benefit the mind and the performance of the task you wish. (REST OF PAGE IS MISSING)

I am pleased to see the improvement in your writing and spelling for which pray tender my thanks to your husband. I might have said Mr. BURNS, but no difference I hope. So much for my compliments. Your old friends and acquaintances are well except JANE WORK who is no better (REST OF PAGE MISSING)...
