I hope that the BURNS FAMILY DNA PROJECT will help solve some of your genealogy questions. It will definitely tell you if you're "barking up the wrong tree".

The 12/25 marker test is simple - just swab the inside of your cheek. The cost for the 12 marker test is $99. This test will tell you within 14 generations whether you are related to someone. There are more definitive tests also. If you want to upgrade later you can.

We need males with the BURNS last name for this study. Please ask your male BURNS relatives to join our study. Click on the BURNS DNA link above to join our study.

PENNY BURNS GRONEN of Dubuque, Iowa says, "My grandmother, SYBIL BURNS, did our families genealogy linking us to ROBERT BURNS, the poet. The link is through JOHN BURNS. They emigrated from Scotland in 1747 settling in what she said is Mifflin Co PA. JOHN came with his brother JAMES. WILLIAM, the father of ROBERT BURNS (poet) stayed in Scotland. The father of JOHN BURNESS, JAMES BURNESS & WILLIAM BURNESS was ARCHIBALD BURNESS.

JOHN BURNSESS & JAMES BURNSESS, brothers, who were uncles to ROBERT BURNS (poet) said to have made the first cannon in the U.S. A. at their blacksmith shop in Franklin Co PA. This cannon was captured at the battle of Brandywine and sent back to England as a trophy.

JOHN BURNS (BOURNS), son of ARCHIBALD BURNS, who emigrated from Scotland to America in 1752 settled in that part of York Co PA now known as Adams Co.

The "Whiskey Rebellion" was from 1794 to 1795.

NORMA, I have read your Web page and yes there is an ARCHIBALD BURNS who was a part of the ROBERT BURNS, the poet, lineage. My lineage, ARCHIBALD and ROBERT'S grandfather, ROBERT BURNES, were brothers. ARCHIBALD was not registered at the time of his birth which I guess was quite common in those days.

A cousin in Illinois had touched base with a lady in Coulterville, Illinois who has the same lineage as our family but she passed away before we were able to get any information from her. Apparently she had done a lot of research but did not have it in any kind of order so her family knew what she was doing. However we do have a letter from her confirming the ARCHIBALD, SAMUEL, SAMUEL which is our connection. SAMUEL BURNS SR came to New Brunswick and worked with JOHN PARR a year before the influx of United Empire Loyalists in 1783. SAMUEL BURNS, my great-great grandfather was a baby at the time.

My family has an interesting history as I am sure yours does. Would love to hear more about your family. I am putting mine together in a book which has been a lot of work and involved three years of research, etc. AUDREY BURNS WIRTZFELD

JOHN BOURNS (ARCHIBALD) cannon maker b. about 1750 in Waynesboro, Franklin Co, PA d. April 20, 1802 bur. in a private graveyard not far from the banks of the Antietam Creek on the Willow Glen farm m. ESTHER d. 6/8/1797. JOHN & ESTHER are buried together about two miles Southwest of his home and the shop where he had made his famous cannon. Their tombstones still stand and the inscriptions on them are still legible. Others of their family are buried there, filling the small burial plot, except for two graves that are unmarked but which contain the remains of the two RENFREW sisters, who were murdered by Indians as they did the family washing at their humble home just a little distance away, across the creek. JOHN & ESTHER had eleven children.

JOHN BOURNS (ARCHIBALD) is thought to be a first cousin of the great Scottish Poet, ROBERT BURNS (BURNESS). In a paper read before the Kittochtinny Historical Sociey in Feb 1908-1910, now Vol VI it says that, "It was of JOHN BOURNS, capable son of a forceful Scotsman; a sturdy, God-honoring man and a patriot who forged with his hammer the first cannon made in America and who served as a soldier in the ranks and then an artificer in the army of (GEORGE) WASHINGTON, that I proposed writing; and of his son, JAMES BURNS (JOHN, ARCHIBALD), who fought as an officer in the War of 1812; and of HUGH DINWIDDIE, who won such recognition for bravery and knowledge of warfare in the French and Indian War, that he was made an officer in the forces of the colonies when the Revolutionary War was precipitated".

"It was of these and some of their descendants I set out to tell, when there came, unexpectedly, the knowledge that the story of war heroes must be mellowed, in part, to the peaceful, love-filled measures of a master among poets".

COUSIN OF ROBERT BURNS, THE SCOTTISH POET

(Kittochtinny papers - cont.) "Within the past ten days there came to descendants of JOHN BOURNS in this country, a belated but richly appreciated message that there belonged to the family of their forebears the most graceful and the best loved of Scottish poets, ROBERT BURNS".

"Some time ago there was begun, in curiosity rather than tradition or hope, an inquiry into a possible degree of relationship between ARCHIBALD BOURNS, father of JOHN BOURNS, the cannon-maker, of this county, and ROBERT BURNS. The inquiry led to records in London and in Edinburg and after long waiting, established the fact that ARCHIBALD BOURNS was a brother of WILLIAM BURNESS, the father of ROBERT BURNS; that JOHN BOURNS, in whose blacksmith shop along the Antietam Creek, not far from Waynesboro, was made the first American piece of artillery, was a first cousin to the great Scottish poet, and that there flows in the veins of a number of Franklin County PA people the same blood that gave such vigorous life to the immortal "BOBBY" BURNS".

The work for this evening had new fascination then and there was added new interest to the story of men of action for a century and a half in this county.

JOHN BURNESS wrote:

I can't see any likely link to your family. The BURNS name was very common in Scotland, Ireland, and England and there are many totally unrelated families named BURNS. The spelling BOURNS was only found in Ireland, and I am sure there is no connection of the CUTHBERTSON family to the poet's since there was no ARCHIBALD in the poet's family.

Since the poet's ancestors were mostly farmers in northeast Scotland, I personally think it unlikely that any would have emigrated to America at an early date. If your JOHN BURNS bought land in Pennsylvania 1684, I don't see how he could have been in Scotland in 1690.

I don't have anything more definite on COLONEL JOHN BURNESS, son of WALTER BURNESS, although there are several early BURNESS families in Kincardine that could be descended from him.

At 11:24 PM 25/10/99 -0700, you wrote: Our family thinks they are related to ROBERT BURNS, the Poet. It was my theory that it was through his Uncle, COLONEL JOHN BURNESS who was last heard of in Scotland in 1690 when he paid his fynes (or perhaps these amounts were sent).

The BOURNS family of Pennsylvania claim a direct link. We don't think we ARE related to the BOURNS family of Franklin Co PA.

BROTHERS CAME HERE

Two of the brothers of WILLIAM BURNESS came to this country. THOMAS BOURNS emigrated from Scotland and found a new home for himself in Mifflin County, this State (PA), in 1747.

ARCHIBALD BOURNS, the second brother of WILLIAM BURNESS, an uncle of ROBERT BURNS, and the BOURNS with whose descendants this sketch has to do, came to America from Lanark or Edinburg, Scotland in 1752. With him came his wife, JANET CUTHBERTSON, her brother, REV. JOHN CUTHBERTSON, and MR. BOURNS' nephew, THOMAS. ARCHIBALD BOURNS settled in what is now Adams County. He and his wife and her dominie brother were of the Covenanter faith. The latter was sent out by the Church of Scotland to act as the shepherd of a colony in this section of Pennsylvania.

To ARCHIBALD and JANET BOURNS were born two sons, JAMES BOURNS and JOHN BOURNS. ARCHIBALD BOURNS died while his sons were mere lads and his widow married FRANCIS MEREDITH. JAMES BOURNS (ARCHIBALD) married a MISS GABBY and, JOHN BOURNS (ARCHIBALD) married ESTHER MORROW daughter of JEREMY MORROW, grandfather of a Governor of Ohio.

JOHN FRANCIS BOURNS was a school teacher in early life. For a while he taught in Shippensburg. Then he went to Chambersburg and read medicine there with Dr. JEREMIAH SENSENY. A letter to his mother tells that he was there during the cholera epidemic.
