I hope that the BURNS FAMILY DNA PROJECT will help solve some of your genealogy questions. It will definitely tell you if you're "barking up the wrong tree".
The 12 marker test is simple - just swab the inside of your cheek. The cost is $99. This test will tell you within 14 generations whether you are related to someone. There are more definitive tests but for our initial purposes the 12 marker test is all we need. If you want to upgrade later you can.
We need males with the BURNS last name for this study. Please ask your male BURNS relatives to join our study. Click on the BURNS DNA link above to join our study or write nfarmilo@litestream.net

DESCENDANTS of Joshua John BURNS and Nancy Ellen GRAY
The names used in the BURNS family genealogy may be interchanged when
searching for BURNS with the name LADLEY during the Civil War Era.
Apparently when the BURNS husband passed away, she remarried a LADLEY
who already had children by the name LADLEY. When Joshua John BURNS
enlisted in the Vermillion County, Illinois Civil War Muster Rolls, He
decided to enter in his Step-brothers’ last name to avoid confusion
for the military or the family, we’re not sure.

+ John BURNS b. 1835 Morgan, Butler, Ohio (this is the same county
John's wife is from, Morgan is 20 mi from Oxford) This is why I

I'm posting this on the Ohio site because these people belong to Linda Gray. Linda's DNA (through brother Lowell) is the closest to mine of anyone's. We don't have our relationship pinned down yet. She doesn't know who John's father is. Also she was working on other theories that Nancy was Nancy Peyton instead of her orignal theory of her being Nancy Moore. If anyone can help us please write nfarmilo@comcast.net

I want to thank you for your forum. I have made a connection to Pat
Putnam who is my 2nd cousin twice removed. We are still searching for
John Burns or Joshua Ladley (s) parents. We do not know whether to
trace the Ladley name or the Burns name. But because we are stuck here
in Ohio or Pennsylvania we cannot connect anything else. I wonder
about Matthew and Rebecca Evans Burns in Butler Co, Ohio. Joshua
John's second wife was Nancy Ellen Gray from Butler Co. There is a
John Burns in Morgan Twp. They could have migrated by wagon train
West.
Ralph had posted this on Genealogy.com sometime ago. This is probably what we're looking for.
I am not saying they are both your lines, but I think John W. and Lard (Laird) Burns are brothers and have numbered them 1 and 2.

I will have to get out my records and check. Not much is known about my mother's side of the family. Her paternal grandfather was named GEORGE BURNS (no kidding!) and lived in Ashland, OH. I could find no family history of him, but he's mentioned in some county histories.
Her maternal grandmother's family name was REYNOLDS/WOODS. They were from
Ashland and Medina. I found the burial sites for most of them in Medina. My uncle says that the BURNS side came through Pennsylvania into Ohio, and that the REYNOLDS/WOODS side were Pennsylvania Dutch.

Norma, I have checked much of your website. I thought I had something but after checking the birth dates they were wrong. (This family is on this website somewhere. Keep checking the links.) My WILLIAM BURNS, as near as I can tell was born about 1806-07 and married according to the census must have been about 1830's.
Their first daughter is NANCY ANN BURNS who in the 1850 census is 16. NANCY BURNS married GEORGE HOCH and they moved to Indiana for a spell. I feel there must be some connection for the young couple to go there. Was it an uncle, grandparent that caused them to live in Indiana before coming to Ohio.
I do know their daughter MISSOURI HOCH was born there (Indiana) and she married an ALVIN COOPER. I just can't seem to connect WILLIAM.
WILLIAM BURNS was 43 in 1850 and MARGARET was 37, that's 6 years. One night lying in bed I realized he could have been married twice. I can't find any facts to substantiate that. If you have any suggestions please let me know and thanks.

Dear Norma,
My Grandfather was JOSEPH ANTHONY BURNS. His father's name was JOHN. JOHN BURNS was killed in 1901 in a train accident at the age of 40 leaving my
grandfather and his brother to support 8 sisters and JOHN'S wife MARY EMMA MILLER. JOHN BURNS had 2 brothers, JOSEPH and ANTHONY. They had all worked on the railroad.
The CLARK connection comes from JOHN BURNS' wife, MARY EMMA MILLER. MARY EMMA'S Mother's last name was CLARK. This is the CLARK that is thought to have directly descended from ABRAHAM CLARK, the Congressman from NJ who signed the Declaration of Independence. I think she came from Indiana PA and I think that the NJ CLARKS that ABRAHAM CLARK fathered, migrated to Indiana PA.
We don't know much about the parents of the 3 BURNS brothers except that the BURNS brothers were Catholic and MARY EMMA CLARK MILLER was Protestant. We do know that MARY EMMA MILLER was related to THOMAS NOBLE MILLER who ANDREW CARNEGIE refers to in his autobiography as his dearest friend and as the man who was responsible for setting him up in business.
JOSEPH BURNS ended up supporting his 8 sisters and his mother, on his own, because his brother left the house soon after his father was killed. JOSEPH BURNS was only 13. JOSEPH ended up raising 5 daughters and one son of his own as well as his sister-in-law's 5 children after her death.
He had a hand in raising us, his grandchildren, as well. He was the hero of his own life. All in all, he had a hand in raising and supporting several dozen children in his life. He began these responsibilities when he was a child himself.
That is basically what I know. I have ordered the basic DNA test to get started. Do you think that it would make more sense for one of my brothers to be tested?
