I hope that the BURNS FAMILY DNA PROJECT will help solve some of your genealogy questions. It will definitely tell you if you're "barking up the wrong tree".

The 12 marker test is simple - just swab the inside of your cheek. The cost is $99. This test will tell you within 14 generations whether you are related to someone. There are more definitive tests but for our initial purposes the 12 marker test is all we need. If you want to upgrade later you can.

We need males with the BURNS last name for this study. Please ask your male BURNS relatives to join our study. Click on the BURNS DNA link above to join our study or write nfarmilo@litestream.net

The Ransom Burns, spoken of in Austin County, Texas, was my g g grandfather, born in Virginia or North Carolina ca. 1800. He is not the same person spoken of in your text. My Ransom moved to Texas in 1841, according to his application for a land grant. Our Ransom first settled in Walker County, Texas and then moved to Austin County, near the village of Nelsonville. He died in 1876 and is buried in the Burns Cemetery near Nelsonville. He was married to Achsah Bunn/Burn. I have been attempting to trace his ancestry since 1972 and have been unsuccessful in doing so. Fred A. Burns, Jr., 121 Neva Lane, Oden AR 71961. Ph # 870-326-4508.

FRANCIS MARION BURNS
F. M. (Francis Marion) BURNS is one of the prominent representatives of commercial and financial interests of Western Texas, the base of his operations being Colorado. His success has resulted from his ready recognition and utilization of opportunity, his strong purpose and his unfaltering diligence, and his life record proves what may be accomplished through the exercise of these qualities. His father, Marion T(Turner?). Burns, was a native of South Carolina, who was born, reared and spent his entire life in Fairfield County. His wife bore the maiden name of Sally Nettles and was also a native of that county.

Francis Marion Burns, born July 2, 1850, was one of a family of thirteen children and was reared upon the farm in Fairfield District (SC). At the time when he would otherwise have been in school the Civil war was in progress and it was impossible to maintain schools in that locality. He remained with his father up to the time of the latter’s death in 1871, working upon the farm and also pursuing his education at intervals in one of the old log schoolhouses such as the country afforded at that time. After the death of his father he began farming on his own account, but seeing that there was little chance for a young man in that part of the country he gathered his belongings and started for Texas, reaching Athens, Henderson county, in January, 1874, with a capital of six dollars and seventy-five cents. For six months he was employed on a farm in that locality and was then appointed deputy sheriff of the county, in which capacity he served for eighteen months. He next turned his attention to clerking in a dry goods store, where he remained for nine months, after which he engaged in business on a small scale for himself in Athens. In the spring of 1878, however, he removed to Canton, Van Zandt County where he conducted a mercantile enterprise until 1882.

In the spring of the latter year he arrived in Colorado, which was then a recently organized town. Here he turned his attention to the sheep business, which he carried on until 1884, and then sold out. In the fall of 1882 he has been instrumental in organizing the firm of Dunn, Coleman & Company, general merchants, which firm was succeeded in July, 1883, by the firm name of Burns, Walker & Company, general merchants, under which style the business was continued until January, 1892, when the store became the property of the firm of Burns & Bell, which has had a continuous existence to the present date. They have had a trade extending as far as Paloduro Canyon about twenty miles south of Amarillo (TX)and west to New Mexico, the carrying trade being done in wagons. The sales of the house are now represented by a large figure annually and the business has long since reached extensive and profitable proportions.

Mr. Burns (Francis Marion) is the vice-president of the Colorado National Bank of Colorado, Texas, which is capitalized for one hundred thousand dollars and has a surplus of similar amount. It is the strongest and largest bank between Fort Worth and El Paso. Prior to his connection with this institution Mr. Burns was vice-president of the Citizens’ National Bank from 1890 until 1892, when it went into liquidation.

On the 15th of December, 1877, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. (Francis Marion) Burns and Miss Flora Bell, a daughter of Mrs. A. S. Bell, of Colorado, Texas. Mrs. Burns was born in Alabama but was married in Athens, this state. Their family numbers a son and two daughters: Brookie, the wife of Dr. J. B. Gray, of El Paso, Texas; Douglas, who is with his father in the store; and Linnie, the wife of D. L. Harell, a druggist of Pecos, Texas. Mr. Burns belongs to the Baptist church, with which he has been identified for twenty years, and since 1880 he has been affiliated with the Masonic fraternity, taking the degrees of the lodge and chapter. He has also been an Odd Fellow since 1875. Mr. Burns is an interesting talker and his fund of information concerning general subjects is extended. He has been a close observer, thinking along practical lines, and is a man of action rather than of theory. He also aimed to secure tangible results, the value of which he could be tested in the competitive market. Systematic in the transaction of business, absolutely truthful and reliable in everything, and well informed as to the progress of events, with a watchful eye upon the business world, he allows nothing to escape his attention that may add to his efficiency in the work to which he has devoted his life.

My gggrandfather was Clarence Edward Burns, born in Dublin, Ireland, date unknown. This info has not been confirmed. His name & place of birth appears on one of his children's death certificate (Mary Jane Burns Harris). I am not absolutely sure of this name, since he is not on any census. He died before 1842. He married Jerusha Lemons (married name) and they had two children. Mary Jane Burns born Abt 1839 and John Burns born in 1842. Both were born in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. Have been unable to find them on the 1840 census for Louisiana.

John Burns is my ggrandfather. He married Mary Jane Dossey Potter abt 1884 in Limestone County, Texas. He had two sons, Cleburne Grandbury Burns and Jarred Burns. Cleburne is my grandfather. My father was Cleburne Esco Burns born 12/12/1912 in Bullard, Cherokee County, Texas. He just died on 12/13/2005, 93 years old. He was the reason I became interested in genealogy. He wanted to know about his family because his family would not talk about it. I found more kinfolk that he could have imagined. Except I have not been able to find Clarence's parents or siblings.

You may post any info and my name. I am having his DNA tested. I just ordered the kit. We took his DNA the day he died.

JBURNS407@aol.com JUDY of Oklahoma City writes: I am researching my husband's grandparents who were living in the Dekalb area of Bowie County, TX, when they died (we believe).

PARKER T BURNS born 1876 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL died between 1910-1920

His wife, MELINDA J SMITH born March 1875 in AR died between 1910-1920

When they died, sometime between 1910 and 1920, they left three daughters and two sons, all young. The three girls were placed in the Methodist orphanage in Waco. The youngest son, ARIE LEE BURNS, was given to the WILLIAM WISDOM family who appear in the 1920 census in Collingsworth County, TX.

None of the children are now living. There was some reluctance on my father-in-law's (ARIE) part to discuss his parents so there may be some story other than his parents' death.

Hi RALPH,
My relationship is that my gg-grandfather, DEVEREUX D HOLLAND, was the brother of MARY ANN'S first husband, SPEARMAN HOLLAND, JR. Among the children listed in 1870, NANCY and ELIZA are MARY ANN'S, and I suspect that "SHEARMAN" is also. His name, I would guess, is actually "SPEARMAN". LINEAS is the name of MARY ANN'S Father, LINEAS COCK, but I don't have any information about him.

The 1860 Panola Co. census shows:
SPEAR HOLLAND, 29, Farmer, $2,000, $14,000, Tenn
MARY HOLLAND 26, H.K., Tenn
JOHN HOLLAND, 8, Tex
NANCY HOLLAND, 6, Tex
ELIZA HOLLAND, 4, Tex

I hope this helps you, and I'm sorry I don't have any more information about SAMUEL. - BETTIE

At 09:50 PM 10/11/2000 -0500, you wrote: Hello BETTIE.....Thank you for the information about SAMUEL T BURNS on GenForum. It seems that SAMUEL T'S children, JAMES BURNS & JOSEPHINE BURNS were still at home in 1870. How many of the others are MARY'S?

Is he the SAMUEL T BURNS who bought land in Freestone Co., TX in 1851 & 1853? And is he the one who married ELIZA SMITH 20 March 1838 in San Augustine, TX?

The big question that I am getting at, was he a son of SAMUEL T BURNS & ELIZA LYONS of Wilkes Co., GA who married 9 January, 1812? I appreciate any help in tying this together, and am glad to share anything I have .....RALPH BURNS

P.S. SILAS HOLTZCLAW on the chart was a brother of my g-g-grandmother, CHARLOTTE HOLTZCLAW BURNS wife of JAMES W BURNS, brother of SAMUEL T BURNS of Wilkes Co., GA.

(From RALPH BURNS)

WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA, Newspaper Abstracts, 1802, 1805--1809

TO THE PUBLIC. Whereas ALEXANDER M TRUMAN has stated, in an advertisement in the Monitor of the 21st instant, that his wife "has forsaken her place of abode, through the insinuating counsel of her relatives, without legal provacation." As one of her relatives, I take this method to state a few facts to the public, of which I can bring sufficient proof.

In the first place he has threatened her life, besides giving her bodily abuse. Not quite six weeks ago he struck her over the head with a stick, and left a wound fully an inch and a half long, which is not yet fully healed. As to her being persuaded away by her relatives, I deny the charge; for not one of them had seen her for more than three weeks, when my brother and myself were sent for by her, in consequence of his having ordered her to leave his house---but, on his making fair promises, she at that time forgave him, and we left them in apparent friendship. He did not keep his promises long, before he returned to his old practices again, threatening her life, &c. I was credibly informed, that the night before she left him, he sharpened his penknife in her presence, and swore that he thirsted for her blood.

Now I leave it to the impartial public to determine, whether she left him without legal provocation.

JAMES W BURNS. The above statement is attested to be the truth, by JULIA M TRUMAN. June 28, 1806.

I have some newspaper clippings on a shooting in Porum where they hired a gunman to shoot SAMUEL ROBERTS! It's pretty interesting reading! I'll try to put that in google like you said and see if I can find out anything else!

I am trying to find the place of burial for my Grt Grandfather JAMES MADISON BURNS or JAMES M BURNS. He died sometime in June or July 1901 at his home at Mammoth Springs Ark, his wife was SARAH ALICE ROBERTSON.

Children that were in the home at the time of his death were: MOSE CLEVELAND BURNS; HENRY WALTER BURNS; JOSEPH ARTHUR BURNS, my Grandfather; a son named BERTIE BURNS; and a daughter, DORA EVELYN BURNS. There were 12 Children all together but the others were either married or living out of the home. Any information about a death certificate or burial place would be appreciated. Thank you very much. I am sure "JOHN W BURNES" is the one in Wilkes Co. (son of JAMES & JEMIMA BURNES) that I found as "JOHN WODY BURNES". Who is "JNO WM BURN"? Could "JOHN W BURNES" possibly be the "JOHN BURNES" on the 1790 census in Montgomery Co., MD? Who was the "JOHN BURNS" on the jury in Wilkes Co. in 1779?

1800 Oglethorpe County is the only Georgia County with a surviving 1800 census. ... BURN, JNO., WM., CAPT. MCCARTEY. 51) BURNES, JOHN W.; CAPT. MCELROY ... www.rootsweb.com/~gaogleth/1800.htm
