I hope that the BURNS FAMILY DNA PROJECT will help solve some of your genealogy questions. It will definitely tell you if you're "barking up the wrong tree".

The 12 marker test is simple - just swab the inside of your cheek. The cost is $99. This test will tell you within 14 generations whether you are related to someone. There are more definitive tests but for our initial purposes the 12 marker test is all we need. If you want to upgrade later you can.

We need males with the BURNS last name for this study. Please ask your male BURNS relatives to join our study. Click on the BURNS DNA link above to join our study or write to nfarmilo@litestream.net

WILLIAM TURNER BURNS (WASHINGTON SR.; JAMES ESQ.; JOHN; John; JOHN B; JOHN) b. 1819 Lewistown, Mifflin Co. PA d. 4/8/1869 age 51 m. 11/12/1840 in Lewistown, Mifflin Co., PA to ANNA MARY (RUSHTON?) COOPER b. 2/8/1824 in PA d. 4/26/1874 age 50 of pulmonary consumption Their marriage announcement listed her as Miss Anna Mary R. Cooper. They were married by Rev C. Lepley, a Lutheran Minister.

WILLIAM TURNER BURNS was a plasterer. He died from the poison used in the plaster. He died at the age of 51 on 4/9/1869 in Lewistown. He is buried in St. Mark's Presbyterian Church Cemetery (lot 73) downtown Lewistown PA.

WILIAM TURNER BURNS' mother was ELLEN TURNER. His father was WASHINGTON BURNS, SR.

ANNA MARY (RUSHTON) COOPER b. 1820 (1850 census) (2/8/1824 according to death record) d. 4/26/1874 age 50, of pulmonary consumption in Lewistown, Mifflin Co., PA bur. St. Mark's Presbyterian Cemetery Lot 73 in Lewistown, PA now moved to St Mark's Community Cemetery away from the City Center. It is passed down through the family that her last name was RUSHTON (her son's middle name) therefore, I am assuming that her second husband was MR. COOPER. However, her cemetery records say ANNA BURNS. Also her marriage record from the paper said "Miss Anna Mary R Cooper. The Miss is confusing the issue. Perhaps the Rushton is from her father's mother or her mother's maiden name. Nothing can be found at this point. There is more confusion because on census record has her being born in Vermont and another in Pennsylvania.

Their children as given to me by PAUL FRANCIS BURNS of PA are:

1) CHARLES RUSHTON BURNS (my ancestor) b. 10/7/1854 Lewistown, PA. Inherited property from his father (over 14 years of age) (see link)

2) MARTHA H BURNS b. 1850 - 1925 m. JOHN ROSS d. 3/11/1901 57 yrs old (Co B 49 Rect PA vol) son: RUSHTON W ROSS d. 4/13/1873 (infant)

3) MARY ELLEN BURNS b. 1851. Inherited property from father (over 14 years of age)

4) ELIZA B BURNS m. WALTER W GRAHAM

5) SARAH A BURNS d. 3/30/1863 in Lewistown PA

6) MARGARET C BURNS d. 1/19/1841 or 6/19/1841 in Lewistown, PA

7) GEORGE W BURNS b. 3/17/1844 in Lewistown PA d. 1906, Will Book 9, page 26 Mifflin Co.

JAMES BURNS 15, s/o GEORGE BURNS hurt in farm accident in Brown Twp 7/29/1874. Is this the George W Burns who married Mary Hackett? Probably not the son of Wm Turner Burns

8) MARGARET J BURNS b. 1844 Lewistown PA d. 12/21/1847 (confirmed child of WM T & ANNA M)

9) SARAH E BURNS b. 4/1848 in Lewistown PA d. 1/7/1848 age 9 months (confirmed child of WM T & ANNA M) Lewistown

10) SAMUEL H BURNS d. 6/20/1858 or 6/23/1858 Lewistown (confirmed child of WILLIAM T & ANNA M) age 3 months
There are two MARGARET'S and two SARAH'S. One of each died young.

Some of these children may not be correct. Please send me the information you have with your source.

MARY ELLEN BURNS and CHARLES RUSHTON BURNS both above the age of 14 inherited some property when WILLIAM TURNER BURNS died. In Orphans Court records in Mifflin County William Willis was appointed guardian. No one else is mentioned in this document.

It is interesting that there is also another RUSHTON in the family. MARTHA H BURNS who m. JOHN C ROSS had a son RUSHTON W ROSS who died 4/13/1873 in infancy. JOHN C ROSS d. 3/11/1901 age 57. He was b. abt 1846. JOHN C ROSS was in Co B 49 Rect PA Vol.

Hi Norma,

Last Saturday I went up to the Mifflin County Historical Society in Lewistown. I had made an appointment so a researcher met me with a lot of preliminary work that she had done. I already had a lot of it from your work. Since I only had about three hours I concentrated on our woman of mystery, Anna Mary R (Rushton) Cooper Burns. We perused the two Lewistown newspapers and found a marriage notice for her and William Turner Burns, also death notices for both of them. I was able to establish the following facts: 1) I should back up to say that Anna Mary was born in Pennsylvania, not Vermont, according to several census records. 2) Her maiden name was COOPER. In the marriage announcement she is named as Miss Anna Mary R. Cooper. Other marriage notices at the time always listed widows as MRS. so-and-so. 3) They were married by Rev. C. Lepley, a Lutheran minister. 4) Her birth date is 8 February 1824. The death notice was very specific about it. 5) She died of pulmonary consumption.

I also found a Lewistown newspaper death notice for Charles Rushton Burns which states that he died of paralysis. I assume that is what we would now call a stroke---same thing his son, my grandpa Sam Burns, died of. I already had a copy of Charles' (Rushton Burns) death notice in an Iowa newspaper. It states that his body was shipped home from the Mt. Pleasant State Hospital (for the insane) to his mother-in-law, Permelia "Amelia" Fry. No mention of his wife Sarah Phina "Sallie" Fry Burns who was still living at the time.

RUSHTON is not a surname that the Lewistownians were familiar with. There are lots of COOPERS is the area. After 1820 RUSHTONs start appearing in Philadelphia. It will take some more searching to find the connection.

Other tidbits the researcher told me: Even though she is not a Burns, she has done a lot of work on the Burns line. Most local church records of births and marriages don't go back beyond abt 1835. Ministers kept records before that but considered them to be their private property and took the records with them when they moved on.

They (the Historical Society) have never been able to find a burial place for Washington and Ellen Turner Burns. (They were probably buried in Indiana. Norma). They may have been buried on family land which has since changed hands and any markers disappeared into the mists of time.

She showed me (on microfilm) the Orphans Court records that assigned William Willis as guardian of Charles and Mary Ellen Burns' estate from William T. Burns. Also an entry where he submited his report and another where he wants to be relieved from guardianship.

I went out to the cemetery and took photos of the Burns monument where Anna Mary and William Turner are buried. The cemetery is not next to the church in town anymore. They wanted to build up that plot so the bodies were moved to St. Mark's Community Cemetery away from city center.

I will photocopy all the documentation for the above and send it to you via snail mail. Also I'll send the photographs when I get them developed. Is your address still 4036 Kent Ct.?

In addition to pursuing the Cooper-Rushton connection, I want to go into the Magill/Buchanan and Turner lines further. Also still need to sort out all those earlier James' and Johns.

Norma, I had fun doing this. The countryside around Lewistown is so beautiful. I hope you are enjoying the summer. I saw your picture on the Congregational Church's webpage. Are you still organist there?

Your cousin, Donna (P.S.) Of course you may post this info on your website.(Donna's Grandfather, Sam Burns and my Grandfather, Charles Earl Burns were brothers). I've never met Donna but have pictures of her father and Aunt when they were young teenagers and of her Grandparents. The brothers kept in touch. My Aunts and Uncles visited them but then our family got so big most of them lost touch. Norma

My grandmother had asked me to research her father's side of the family because he was killed when she was very young. Her grandfather was WILLIAM TURNER BURNS and he was married to DAISY ADELAIDE, I believe.

I was wondering if you knew the offspring of the WILLIAM BURNS you speak of who lived from 1819-1869. If you know his son is indeed her grandfather, I would greatly appreciate some information concerning her family's history if you know of it.

Please email me at faithfan01@hotmail.com and let me know what you know. Thank you! RACHEL

The stone is located at Saint Mark's Cemetery in Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pa. It is more accurately described as a 'monument' rather than a normally expected tombstone or head stone. It closely resembles the Washington Monument, but of course, on a much smaller scale.

It has four sides, and reads as follows: Side 1: WILLIAM TURNER BURNS d. 4-8-1869, 51 yrs old
wife, ANNA MARY BURNS d. 4-26-1874, 50 yrs old
SAMUEL H BURNS d. 6-23-1858
SARA BURNS WEST d. 2-5-1896, 84 yrs old
MARGARET C BURNS d. 6-19-1841
GEORGE W BURNS d. 3-17-1844
MARGARET J BURNS d. 12-21-1847
SARAH E BURNS d. 1-7-1849
SARAH A BURNS d. 3-30-1863
"Children of WT and AM Burns"

CHARLES BURNS b. 7-3-1803 d. 6-23-1888
ANNA B BURNS b. 8-4-1833 d. 3-1-1836

Side three:

MARTHA H BURNS ROSS, wife 1850-1925
son, RUSHTON W ROSS d. 4-13-1873 Infant Son

I stood in front of the stone and copied this down word for word, not knowing if I would get back to Pa soon, and not knowing if there was a connection with my Burns. Hope this means something to you!

Thanks, Terri
