Anand is, deep down, a tactician. It is this which has helped him to achieve such impressive tournament results, particular at the Melody Amber tournaments (which involve speed chess and blindfold chess). His tatical prowess has helped him, more than any other factor, because it makes him able to crush the weaker participants, and to scramble through against the stronger ones when things go wrong. For a long time Anand was the strongest active player never to be [a real] world champion, losing a match to Kasparov in 1995. However, in September 2007 he won the World Championship tournament in Mexico and was duly crowned World Champion. He successfully defended his title in 2008, 2010, and 2012.
