1999 AD is the apocolypse in Chrono Trigger. It is in this era that Lavos emerges from deep in the earth and destroys the world. After 1999 AD, the Earth is a wasteland where humans are trying bitterly to survive on the gray ashes that was once a great civilization.
Before Lavos emerged in 1999 AD, times seemed to be pretty prosperous for 1999 AD. Technology was flourishing and the land was beautiful. All this was pretty much destroyed by Lavos' arrival at the surface. The world really did end. All that was left was an empty shell, drained by Lavos of its beauty and life.
