The Sensitive Side of 98º

If you listen to "The Hardest Thing" and "Because of You" from 98º's CD 98º and Rising you cannot deny that there's, like, mega-emotion there. Aah! These songs are so melt-worthy, it's almost too much to listen to the entire album in one sitting!

Yep, Nick Lachey, Drew Lachey, Justin Jeffre and Jeff Timmons, the songsters behind the heartfelt 1998 musical masterpiece, can sing songs that ooze with emotional oomph because they themselves are super sensitive. (Could you imagine four totally hardheaded, tough guys trying to sing such touching lyrics? It just wouldn't work!) But in case you, Bopper, don't believe us, we've decided to show you just how sensitive these guys really are.

One way the four songsters show their sensitivity is by being there for each other, no matter what. For instance, if one groupmate is hurting because of relationship problems, the rest of the guys don't act all tough and macho. No way, Jose! They are super considerate of each other's needs, lending a sympathetic ear and offering advice when necessary.

Jeff tells BOP that when he is going through hardships he turns to Nick, Drew and Justin for some majorly important heart-to-hearts. "I am always asking them for advice," the 26-year-old confesses, adding, "Justin comes out with some really good advice. He'll think about it for, like, 10 minutes and then he'll come up with the answer and he is usually right on the money."

Like super-sweet Jeff, Nick passes our sensitivity test with flying colors. he tells us that one time his younger brother, Drew, was totally upset when a girl gave him the boot. Worse yet, this morale-destroying dumpage happened right before the guys went on stage to perform! "I'm walking by and I see that Drew is crying, and he is just heartbroken. This girl broke his heart, and it was just the saddest thing," the 25-year-old singer shares. His heart went out to his baby bro, especially sinc "I've had my heart broken, too. That's why I can talk about it." You see, instead of teasing Drew for allowing a girl to hurt him, or calling him a big-time wimp, nice guy Nick let his sensitive side shine through. "I thought it was cute, my younger brother..." he trails off, still endeared by that moment. Aw! (Okay, enough mush already!)

When Drew, who turns 23 on August 8, overhears his older bro telling us this ultra-personal story, he suddenly toughens up and, in typical-guy fashion, says, "I was a very sensitive guy, but I don't cry anymore. I want to make that very clear." (Yeah, uh-huh! We believe you, Drew) Jeff, on the other hand, is proud of his sensitivity. "I cry all the time," he announces. "I am not going to hide it." Good for you, Jeff! "Okay, okay," Drew confesses, "I also cry all the time. I was crying on the way over here. I will probably start crying any minute," he teases. Ha!

No matter how hard these guys try to pretend they're tough, their teddy bear hearts always give them away. Justin's not afraid to admit it. That's why falling in love is not the hardest thing for this 26-year-old. Au contraire! "I fall in love very easily. It could happen like that!" the blond babe says, snapping his fingers.

Part of being sensitive involves being considerate of other people. And Justin knows how powerful love can be, he is extra sensitive with a girl's heart. For instance, when going through "The Hardest Thing," a breakup, he can't be cold or calculating. No matter how awkward it can be, he says, you have to use your heart and come clean with your mate in the most caring way possible. "When you break up with somebody, you should always do it in person," says the super-sweet guy, who believes in treating others as you would like to be treated. "The phone break up is the worst because it's like your relationship never meant anything- ever! It's like they can't even tell you to your face."

Jeff agrees that it's way important to treat people well. For instance, when he has a date, he doesn't act like a stuck-up guy who wants to show off his girl like a trophy to the other guys. He really invests time in the relationship. "I really like to go to dinner or anythign intimate where you can get to know each other and you can talk and go for a walk," he says. Doesn't that sound romantic!

There you have it. Drew, Nick, Justin and Jeff are more than four ultra-hot, hot hotsters. They're sensitive sweeties, too. So, next time you pop 98º and Rising into your sterio, you are more than entitled to melt. Ahhhh. (That, Bopper, was a sigh!)
