Pictures from the Past - Part 1

Up until about 10 years ago the cod fishery was the main reason for the existence of the town of Bonavista. In the picture below we see a group of men about to sell their salt cod to the local merchant. Can anyone identify any of the fishermen?

According to Brian Groves, the man in the background wearing a white shirt, suspenders and smoking a pipe is his grandfather, Darius (Roy) Groves. Thanks, Brian, for the information. Selling Salt Cod

The next picture shows the Bonavista waterfront in the late 1940's. Note the stages and flakes in the foreground.

Here we see another part of Bonavista Harbour - locally known as Sweetlands Bank - at a time when there was no Inner Harbour. Sweetland's Bank

This final picture shows the construction of the Inner Harbour from what was known as Harbour Pond. Looks like the pond was drained in order to deepen it.
