Although most residents of Bonavista had their own wells prior to the installation
of water and sewerage, quite a lot of people had to get their drinking water from the
public well located on Church Street across from the Post office. The water was drawn
from the well and placed in wooden barrels that were moved to and from the area on a
small two wheeled (hand) cart. In the picture below we see three women at the well
obtaining their drinking water.
The next picture shows a funeral moving past the Post Office area of Church Street.
The coffin was carried on a horse drawn hearse and the mourners walked behind.
If the deceased person was in an organization, e.g. the Orange Society, the members would also follow behind.
The final picture shows a parade passing the War Memorial - Library area.
It appears to be heading back toward the SUF Hall. This might be after the
service at the War Memorial held on July 1st. In the early 50's, hundreds of
people would gather at the War Memorial for the service and to see the parade.
Special thanks to Reg Way, Bonavista, for providing me with the negatives from which I obtained the black and white photos I've
used on these pages.
