On a sunny, Sunday afternoon in late summer one of the popular activities engaged in by many residents and visitors to Bonavista is a leisurely drive
up around Bonavista Bay, across the Peninsula to Trinity Bay and then back to Bonavista.
With the aid of some photos which I took this summer, let us take such a trip.
From Newman's Cove we drive through the community of Amherst Cove - actualy Lower and Middle Amherst Cove - and after a short while arrive at Hodderville. This community now consists of cabins and summer homes
of people from the area. Back in the late 50's and early 60's, most of the original residents of Hodderville relocated to larger communities on the Peninsula.
All is quiet except fot the sound of the gulls as we drive through this community but with the car window down we can smell the aroma of barbecued moose steaks as we pass a cabin. Next we pass through the communities of Knight's Cove and Stock Cove (photos below)
Leaving Bonavista we drive up towards Newman's Cove. On the way we pass Clark's Pond where numerous residents of Bonavista have built cabins and/or set up campers.
This is quite a busy area during the weekends and summer evenings. Just before we get to Newman's Cove (photo), we pass through the small village of Birchy Cove. The only activity on this beautiful sunny afternoon is a group of boys and girls swimming in a small pool formed by the stream that runs out into the Cove.
As we drive through Newman's Cove we notice a few residents hanging out near the local wharf and a few kids playing on the flat rocks that substitute as a beach in the area. A few of the older, more adventurous boys are diving off the end of the wharf.
