Beginner's Guide to Woodworking

To Build ... Add Some Power!!

In our continuation of hand-held Power Tools, we will now look at the Circular Saw. Again, this tool can be purchased as a portable or as an electical unit.

The portable Circular Saw like the portable Drill loses its speed and power as the battery runs down. Although the portable can be ok for cutting several pieces, the electric Circular Saw can't be beaten. If faced with the option of one or the other, the electric Circular Saw should be the choice.

Whichever Circular Saw you choose, always remember, this saw can be very dangerous when operated improperly. Due deligence and caution should be exercised when operating this saw. Always support your workpiece and never use excessive force to saw through the workpiece. For the electric Circular Saw, keep the cord out of harms way. And always read the owners manual. This applies to all Power Tools.

When you purchase the Circular Saw it will come witn a blade already attached. However, you should be aware there are different  blades used for different thickness of wood.  Some types of blades are <<here>>!!

The Saber Saw (also known as a JigSaw) is another hand-held Power Tool that is a great addition to the Workshop. This tool is easy to use than most and can cut irregular shapes in most thickness of wood. It can also cut circles. JigSaw blades are inexpensive and easy to replace.

The <Sander> is used extensively in the Workshop. Almost every project will require sanding of some or all parts, depending on the project chosen. When using the Sander do not use excessive force to sand parts. Instead apply a little pressure and allow the Sander to do its job.

There are several types of hand-held Sanders and each has its place in the Workshop. They are: Pad, Orbital and Belt Sander.

In the beginning, a Pad Sander can be the first to be bought. However, each Sander has its own abilities and should be purchased sooner rather than later.  More on Sanders and their use on the Next Page
