Valentine Rand Lansen

We don't read and write poetry because its cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, business, engineering, law, these are noble pursits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, "Oh me, Oh Life, of trains filled with the faithless, of cities filled with the foolish, what good among these, Oh Me, Of Life?" Answer, that you are here, that life exists, and identity. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse...

What will your verse be?

Personality - Val is rather protective of those he loves. He will put others before himself, especially his daughter. He tends to blame himself for things going wrong. He likes to dance and has natural rhythm and grace. His daughter inherited this from him.
History - Valentine was born in 1900 to two working class parents. He fell in love with music when he was just four years old. His parents took him to a county fair and he was able to see a folk singer playing an acoustic guitar. Even at the age of four he knew that he wanted to do that. He actually cried when his parents made him leave and he couldn't watch the guitar player any longer. Once he started school he began to stay after school to play with the music teacher who let him play her piano. His parents could not afford, nor would they permit him to take piano lessons. So he taught himself how to play the piano and every single instrument they had in the music room. His dream was to one day save up enough money to buy an acoustic guitar, which to him seemed like an almost insurmountable amount of money.
His parents tried to dissuade him from pursuing his interest in music. They saw music as a dead end road that he was headed down. They wanted a better life for him than they had. Both of them were manual laborers and it’s a wonder where Val got his good looks and natural charisma. His parents were, if anything, rather plain. When he turned fifteen Valentine got a job and he saved up enough to buy his first acoustic guitar. He dropped out of High School when he was 16 in order to pursue music, he wanted more time to write and play his music. His parents were horrified and tried to force him to go back to school. He refused and they told him that he could either go back to school or else move out. Valentine packed a backpack full of clothing and his guitar and left.
He never felt bitter towards his parents, they just could never understand why his music was so important to him. He made his way in the world by playing at bars where he could and performing right in the streets if he had to. When he was 18 (1918) he had been performing in a club and had probably drunk a little too much. A vampire woman fell so in love with his music, his voice, and his good looks that she lured him back to her room and made him a vampire. To preserve forever the beauty in him she said. She gave him a large amount of money and stayed with him for three months to teach him about his new nature.
He met Elizabeth in 1919. Also performing in a club. He fell in love with her almost on sight. They were married one year later in 1920. They both wanted a child but vampires have a difficult time conceiving and so Elizabeth had many miscarriages before they were finally able to have a child in 1928. Elizabeth was certain that it would be a girl and named her Bethany.
The Council of Slayers heard of Bethany and they issued an order that the child be retrieved for testing purposes. They killed Elizabeth and took Bethany. Valentine returned to find his wife slain and went nearly mad with grief. He hunted down all six of those slayers and killed each one of them. He never knew that they had taken his daughter. He had thought Bethany to be dead along with Elizabeth. He buried his wife and set up 2 headstones for them.
Years later he found Bethany in Colys' basement and rescued her. Needless to say he is a touch bitter after having allowed Bethany to languish in Colys' care for so many years. Valentine is fiercely protective of Bethany, to a fault. He worries about her all the time.
