THE BANKS O' DOON
Ye flowery banks o'bonnie doon,
How can ye blume sae fair!
How can ye chant,ye little birds,
An I sa fu o'care!
Thou'll break my heart,thou bonnie bird,
That sings upon the bough,
Thou minds me o' the happy days,
When my fause love was true.
Aft hae I rov'd by bonnie Doon,
Tae see the woodbine Twine;
And ilka bird sang o' it's love,
And sae did I o' mine.
Wi' lightsome heart I pu'd a rose;
Frae aff it's thorny tree;
And my fause luver staw the rose,
But left the thorn wi me.
TO A MOUSE
Wee,sleeket,cowran,tim'rous beastie;
O what panics, in thy breastie!
Thou shall na start awa sae hasty,
Wi' bickering brattle,
I was be laith to rin an' chase thee,
Wi' murd'ring pattle!
A RED RED ROSE
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I,
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun,
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare-thee-weel, my only luve,
And fare-thee-weel awhile!
And I will come again my luve,
Tho 'twere ten thousand miles.
O my luve's like a red red rose,
That's newly sprung in June,
O my luve's like a melody,
That's sweetly played in tune.
BURNS' ADDRESS AT BANNOCKBURN (1793)
Scots' Wha Hae
Scots! wha hae wi' Wallace bled,
Scots! wham Bruce has aften led,
Welcome to your gory bed,
Or to victory.
Now's the day and now's the hour,
See the front o' battle lour;
See approach proud Edwards power,
Chains and slavery.
Wha will be a traitors knave,
Wha can fill a cowards grave,
Wha sae base as be a slave,
Let him turn and flee.
What for Scotlands King and law,
Freedom's sword will strongly draw,
Freeman stand or freeman fa'?
Let him on wi' me.
By oppresions woe's and pains,
By your sons in servile chains,
We will drain our dearests veins,
But they shall be free.
Lay the proud usurpers low!
Tyrants fall in every foe!
Liberty's in every blow!
Let us do or die!
So may God ever defend the cause of Liberty, as he did that day!Amen.
