About the Herb Connection

The Herb Connection is a not-for-profit group dedicated to sharing and delighting in all aspects of herbs.  Located in the beautiful New Boston area of New Hampshire, our ever-growing and fun group is open to all who share our enthusiasm about the "useful" plants.  Meeting monthly, the group selects diverse topics to be discussed. Members expressing an interest may research the topic and lead the group in discussion, or an outside speaker may be contracted to bring new insight.  Past topics include: Organic Fertilizers and Pest Control, English Gardens, and Making Herbal Vinegars. Often a particular herb or herb family is chosen and all members share their own study, crafts or cookery of it. Our incredibly gifted and generous group never ceases to astound us all with their hidden talents.  Our gifts and abilities are as diverse as can be.  Many are beginners to the herbal world and many are veteran gardeners, cooks and craftspeople. Most of us are in between. All are cherished.  We hope you find a place in our warm, personable group and grow in your love and knowledge of the wonderful green world of herbs.

Meetings

Meetings are held monthly on the second Monday of each month. Unless otherwise stated, we meet at 6:45 p.m. at a predetermined
location usually within the New Boston area or Surrounding towns of Goffstown, Weare or Bedford.  Currently, meetings are being held at "Nan's House" located behind the New Boston Church in the center of town.  Other times meetings may be held at a member's home. Meetings are a combination of informal discussion, business and topic presentation, with time for socializing between members.  A rotating hospitality crew helps assure that tea and paper goods are available, however, attending members are always encouraged to bring seasonal or topic-related treats to share with the group.

Ongoing Projects

Raffle

An ongoing, monthly event at our meetings is the Grab Bag Raffle.  This lively fund-raiser brings both needed funds to our group and fun for all.  Members attending meetings bring a brown-bagged item to donate to the raffle.  These items may be handmade, acquired or found treasures, trinkets or otherwise ready-to-pass-on wares.  At the end of each meeting those who wish to participate pay $1.00 per chance, and then tickets are drawn for every bag donated that month.  Winning ticket holders get to pick a grab bag and claim their prize.  The old adage, "One person's trash is another person's treasure" holds true here, as winners go home with new goodies.

Lend a Friend

A recent addition to our activities is our "Lend to a Friend" book swap.  Through this activity we hope to increase herbal related information while keeping personal costs down.  Members bring herbal related books not currently in use to the meeting.  Other members may check out these books for a one-month period.  Records are kept and members assume responsibility for replacing damaged or unreturned books.  This will assure that all books will be cared for with the utmost regard for the property of others.  With concern and care this should prove to be a valuable tool for those looking for new reading sources or those wishing to try out a new book before purchasing it.

Cookbooks

We are very pleased to be providing our very first cookbook. Called the Herb Connection Collection, it is a wonderful collection of recipes submitted by members. The book makes a handy gift, and memento of the group.  Many of the recipes were served at monthly meetings and are tried and true.  Compiled and collected by members, the books sell for $3.00 each.

Newsletter

As part of membership benefits an informative hard-copy newsletter is published and mailed to you monthly.  This newsletter informs members as to upcoming meeting topics, dates, and times, and well as other timely organization news.  In addition to being a great reminder, the newsletter is packed with recipes, crafts, remedies and ways to use herbs.  Many of the recipes included each month come from members themselves and are served at our meetings.  Members are invited to submit recipes, articles, remedies, book reviews or reviews of great "herby" places to see.
